Job summary

Gallup-McKinley County Schools is seeking an Athletic Coach for the Chief Manuelito Middle School baseball program for the spring sport season. The coach will lead the team, develop skills, and promote sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork among student-athletes.

The ideal candidate holds an Athletic Coaching License (7-12) and a high school diploma or equivalent, with the ability to obtain NM licensure and pass the coaching exam. Work is on-site with evenings/weekends required.

Qualifications

• Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
• Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
• Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
• Commitment to examining new theories and procedures in the field.
• Must serve as an appropriate role model for students.

Responsibilities

• Reports to athletic director for objectives and evaluation.
• On-site attendance is mandatory.
• Supervises staff of high school and middle school coaches with athletic director and principals.

ATHLETIC COACHING LICENSE, 7-12

High School Diploma or Equivalency

AND

Must hold or have the ability to obtain an Athletic Coaching License (https://webnew.ped.state.nm.us/bureaus/licensure/how-to-apply/athletic-coach-7-12/) from the New Mexico Public Education Department as well as completing the Fundamentals of Coaching online exam offered through the New Mexico Activities Association. REPORTS TO: The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: On-site attendance is mandatory for this position.

SUPERVISES: In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

JOB GOAL: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.

Work with students interested in sports, provide necessary practice support and advice for a team to be successful against opposing teams in a sports season. Teach and enforce rules and regulations. Involves work on evenings and weekends.
