Job summary

Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, CA is seeking a Varsity Head Coach for Swim & Dive for the 2026-2027 school year. This seasonal role emphasizes athletics and academics, with stipend-based compensation and responsibilities across practices, meets, and student development.

The coach will prioritize academics, develop team rules, schedule practices and games, maintain certifications, and ensure compliance with NFHS, CIF, and district policies, while maintaining open communication with parents

Qualifications

• Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental and advanced coaching techniques.
• Follow NFHS and CIF Codes of Conduct.
• Prior coaching experience; youth experience preferred.
• Be able to manage schedules, communicate with staff and parents.

Responsibilities

• Understand that academics are priority.
• Be alert to student-athletes' academic performance.
• Develop team rules and expectations and communicate these with team & parents.
• Provide schedules for practices, tournaments and games.
• Communicate change in season schedule in a timely manner.
• Be on time and come prepared for all practices and games.
• Maintain current CPR/First Aid certificates and TB clearance.
• Encourage all student-athletes to do their best.
• Apply all school and team rules to all student-athletes equally.
• Be professional in all actions and words.
• Create a positive environment for the team.
• Communicate with individual student-athletes as to their role on the team.
• Clearly communicate NFHS, CIF, SDUHSD, Conference, and team rules to student-athletes and parents.
• Return parent phone calls/emails in a timely manner.
• Communicate with parents as soon as possible regarding injuries to a student-athlete.
• Explain vacation/absence policy.
• Allow student-athletes time away from practice to make-up tests due to athletic competition or tutoring.
• Off-campus walk-on coaches must turn in their keys in order to get paid.
• All coaches must get permission from their Athletic Director to use district facilities out of season.
• Maintain CIF HOME and MAX PREP results/stats.
• Input Schedule into Arbiter, if required by sport assignor.
• Adhere to CIF Dead Period of your sport during the summer.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental skills and techniques, as well as advanced techniques applicable to the sport.
• Demonstrate the ability to teach, enforce, advocate for, and model appropriate behavior, character development, sportsmanship, and educational values for student-athletes.
• Demonstrate the ability to follow the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Code of Conduct and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Coaches Code of Conduct.
• Prior experience in the sport is required; experience working with youth is preferred.

Required Sport-Specific Certifications

• Water Polo, Swimming & Diving: Current Lifeguarding Certification with Deep Water Training, along with CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
• Football: NFHS Football Tackling Certification.
• Cheer: NFHS Cheer Safety Certification.

Athletic Coaching stipend is paid out according to the schedule below:

Fall Coaching: October - November - December (+CIF bonus if applicable)

Winter Coaching: January - February - March (+ CIF bonus if applicable )

Spring Coaching: April - May - June (+CIF bonus if applicable)
