Special Education Teacher - General Curriculum

Starting Date: Immediately

Responsibilities
  • Teaching students with disabilities; motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Assesses and evaluates needs of students.
  • Develops individualized educational programs and lesson plans.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experience based on needs and abilities of students.
  • Provides instruction in individual or group sessions.
  • Formulates and implements functional behavior assessment and behavior assessment plan.
  • Participates in child study meetings.
  • Evaluates students' progress, maintains appropriate records, prepares progress reports.
  • Maintains professional competence through inservice education and self-selected professional books and instructional materials.
  • Establishes a class environment favorable to learning.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with established procedures.
  • Adopts teaching materials and methods to match the learning style of the student.
  • Integrates subject area content with technology.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials.
  • Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and specialty area; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in an acceptable field.

Special Requirements

Eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.

Salary

$60,000 to $93,446 Per Year
