Sylvania is seeking a Head Coach for the Middle School Boys' Basketball Varsity team. The Head Coach will organize and promote an athletic program, fostering a positive learning environment and serving as a role model for students.

Key responsibilities include managing practices, supervising athletes, ensuring compliance with regulations, and modeling sportsmanship. Candidates should have knowledge in the sport, preferably with previous coaching experience.

• Pay: a one-time stipend: $2500.00

Job Summary

The Head Coach organizes, coordinates, and promotes a comprehensive athletic program that is designed to:

• Meet the needs and interests of the school community
• Provide effective leadership that will ensure a positive learning environment and stress the importance of academic achievement
• Demonstrate a high degree of ethics, professionalism and human relations, and be a positive role model for all students

This job reports to the Director of Athletics/Director of Student Activities.

Qualifications

• MPCS staff preferred
• Knowledge and background in assigned sport
• Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable

Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties

• Hold organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the sport
• Assess player’s skills and assign team positions
• Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development
• Work with the athletics director in scheduling facilities for practices and competitions
• Assign duties to an assistant coach as necessary
• Observe players during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement
• Determine game strategy based on the team’s capabilities
• Establish and maintain standards of student behavior and always provide proper supervision of athletes
• Monitor the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met
• Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury
• Confer with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their students
• Follow MPCS and PWCS middle school regulations governing the athletic program
• Model sports‑like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators
• Act as a team representative and promote the sport by communicating with the news media and organizations
• Participate in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies
• Maintain eligibility forms, emergency data cards, equipment inventory, and other related records
• Instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategies, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success
• Instruct participants on personal hygiene and safety procedures and in the need to report injuries to the coach immediately
• Foster among the participants and spectators an appreciation of the values of athletics, a desire to win, an attitude of good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self, team, school, and community
• Direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the varsity athletic team and lead, supervise, and assist the assistant coaches in their efforts with teams assigned to them
• Act as a positive influence upon the behavior of members of the athletic staff and teams
• Be present and personally direct the middle school program
• Supervise athletes at invitational meets or post‑season competitions
• Provide all students involved in the program a safe environment through adequate supervision
• Compile and maintain accurate individual and team performance records
• Issue, collect, inventory, and store equipment and provide accurate records of equipment
• Convey the policies of the team, local school, and MPCS to all participants and families
• Ensure compliance with rules, policies, and regulations for PWCS Middle School Athletics and MPCS
• Submit rosters and paperwork to the Director of Athletics/Director of Student Activities
• Follow the School Activity Funds Manual and local school policies involving financial transactions
• Establish procedures for communicating with parents/guardians
• Implement appropriate procedures when handling injury situations
• Always ensure availability of first aid kit and emergency care cards
• Inspect facilities, equipment and environmental conditions to ensure the safety of participants
• Participate in professional growth activities
• Participate in the award program(s) in adherence of school procedures
• Provide an atmosphere conducive to good sportsmanship
• Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office‑related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
