Thomasville City Schools – Thomasville Middle School, Thomasville, North Carolina

Starting Date: Immediately

Reports To: Principal

Supresses: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; starts the class quickly; keeps students on task; maintains a high level of time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior: Establishes rules and procedures for routine matters, verbal participation, movement, and overall behavior; monitors behavior during all activities and transitions; addresses inappropriate behavior promptly while maintaining student dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation: Reviews prior material; introduces objectives; delivers clear, fluent presentations; uses relevant examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks with high success rates; asks appropriate questions; maintains brisk pacing; transitions smoothly; summarizes key points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Sets firm standards and deadlines; circulates to check work; reviews oral, written, and other products; asks one clear question at a time.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provides corrective and encouraging feedback; gives prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work; offers sustaining feedback for incorrect or no responses.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Plans compatible with school and system goals; uses diagnostic data to revise objectives; records performance accurately; aligns strategies and assessment to student needs; utilizes available resources.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treats all students fairly; interacts effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and the community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Carries out assigned duties; follows laws, policies, and regulations; participates in professional development and demonstrates growth.
  • Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards
  • Physical Requirements: Use classroom equipment; lift, carry, push, pull small objects; consistent with light work.
  • Data Conception: Compare, judge, and interpret data and characteristics.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Speak, signal, listen, receive, and follow instructions.
  • Language Ability: Read and prepare correspondence, reports, and instructional materials.
  • Intelligence: Apply logical reasoning to solve problems, interpret instructions, and analyze variables.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Record and deliver information; explain procedures; communicate in technical and professional contexts.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Use mathematics, percentages, and statistical principles.
  • Spatial and Manual Dexterity: Inspect items; coordinate hands and eyes; handle office tools.
  • Color Discrimination: Differentiate between colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Manage stress and emergency situations with adaptability.
  • Physical Communication: Talk, hear, and use telephone.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially in inclusive activities.
