Job Summary

The CTE-Engineering Teacher is responsible for developing in each student an understanding of Engineering in an innovative classroom environment that fosters, promotes, and develops students' ability to apply problem-solving processes and core content knowledge to solve real-world problems in creative ways that lead to deeper learning. The CTE-Engineering Teacher is responsible to the principal or his/her designee.

Essential Job Functions
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in Engineering.
  • Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops lesson plans and organizes daily classes so that demonstration, instruction, and practice can be completed within the allotted time.
  • Demonstrates skills such as shorthand and use of technological devices/equipment and techniques such as those used in merchandising. Prepares appropriate instructional aids and display materials to enhance learning.
  • Instructs students in use, care and safe operation of business equipment.
  • Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required.
  • Maintains an auditable record of student attendance and makes daily reports.
  • Controls assigned district-owned office equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment in the laboratory-type classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  • Instructs students in importance to employers of accuracy, neatness, efficiency, resourcefulness, and good work habits.
  • Evaluates each student's performance, knowledge, and skills in course being taught and prepares student progress reports and employment references.
  • Maintains continued contact with business community to keep in touch with job entry requirements and current business methods and equipment.
  • Evaluates, selects, and requisitions books, instructional aids, equipment, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  • Participates in curriculum and other development programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  • Attends staff meetings, PTA meetings, and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the school Principal or his/her designee.
Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required)
  • Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree
  • Certification and Licensure: Virginia professional license or ability to obtain a license.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
