Job Description

POSITION TITLE
8730 SUBSTITUTE TEACHER ASSISTANT

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual students or small groups; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the classroom teacher and/or building administrator.

This position requires light work up to 20 lbs occasionally, frequent up to 10 lbs, medium up to 50 lbs occasionally, and frequent up to 20 lbs, with constant light effort. Tasks may involve stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity are required.

Essential Functions / Typical Tasks
  • Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Assists professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
  • Assists students in non-instructional areas such as supervising lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas.
  • Accompanies students on field trips for supervision purposes.
  • Constructs, copies, distributes, and uses educational materials as needed.
  • Assists teacher with parent contact as requested to foster effective parent involvement.
  • Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, and achievement of IEP objectives.
  • Participates in the IEP process and serves as a resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed.
  • Assists students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living to maximize participation in school activities.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing proper assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; principles, practices, and procedures; methodology of effective teaching; school division rules, regulations, and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in an area of specialization or an acceptable field. Eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
