Reports To: Director for Maintenance/Facilities/Construction, and HVAC Supervisor.

Application Deadline: Until Filled.

Length of Work Year: 260.

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt.

Hourly Range: $21.60 - $29.82.

Pay Grade: AU-08.

Primary Purpose

To provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, and comfortable environment by supervising the operation and maintenance of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in the district in a condition of safety, neatness, and aesthetic attractiveness. The HVAC Technician also performs complex heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) work while working under limited supervision. The HVAC Technician works with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Qualifications
Education/Certification
  1. High school diploma or GED preferred
  2. HVAC Technical school certification or Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration license required
  3. Refrigeration recovery certification (preferred)
  4. Water-Cooled/Air-Cooled Chillers Certificate (preferred)
  5. Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and be insurable
Special Knowledge/Skills
  1. Knowledge of HVAC repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques
  2. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material
  3. Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  4. Ability to use hand and power tools
  5. Computer knowledge and competence or ability to gain such knowledge
Experience
  1. At least five years experience in HVAC field
  2. Three years experience in chill water system, cooling towers, and HVAC computer controls
  3. At least three years experience in the HVAC Computer Maintenance programs (preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  1. Leads a crew in the completion of assigned work orders.
  2. Assists in the operation and maintenance of all HVAC and refrigeration equipment in the district.
  3. Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems, including rooftop equipment.
  4. Installs, relocates, and/or expands new heating and air conditioning systems, HVAC systems and components as needed.
  5. Repairs, replaces, or calibrates controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
  6. Fabricates, assembles, and installs duct work and piping according to specifications and code.
  7. Wires and connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
  8. Maintains Freon dispensing records to meet federal requirements.
  9. Maintains preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC tools and equipment, including changing of filters and cleaning condensers and coils.
  10. Performs duct cleaning and air quality testing as needed.
  11. Selects material and hardware and makes time and materials estimates.
  12. Maintains accurate records on material and labor used.
  13. Inspects jobs upon completion and ensures areas are clean.
  14. Works with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  15. Detects needed repairs on equipment following established inspection procedures.
  16. Responds to emergency calls as needed.
  17. Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.; ensures that equipment is in safe operating condition and operates tolls and equipment accordingly
  18. Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  19. Performs thermostatic adjustments and troubles shoot problems utilizing HVAC computerized software.
  20. Ensures vehicles, equipment, and tool boxes are locked and secure at all times while vehicle is left unattended.
  21. Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  22. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Assists and supports the HVAC Department in managing, directing, supervising and training of an effective staff to assure the successful functioning of the department.

Equipment Used

Meter, gage, welding equipment, ladder, hoist, hand and power tools, pipe bender, propane torch. Office equipment such as personal computer, calculator, fax machine. Light van or truck seat belts, shoulder harness, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher, radio communication equipment.

Ability to frequently lift and carry heavy weights (45 pounds and over), sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, ladder, scaffold, or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speech, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, frequent driving and traveling, exposure to temperature extremes (hot or cold), exposure to humidity extremes, exposures to noise, exposure to low or intense illumination, exposure to vibration, exposure to microwaves, exposure to biological hazards (Communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), exposure to chemical hazards (asbestos, fumes, vapors, gases, dust, smoke, etc.), exposure to electrical hazards, work outside, prolonged exposure to sunlight, work with hands in water, work around moving object or vehicles, work around machinery with moving parts, work on slippery surfaces, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours, need to be able to respond/address to after-hours emergencies/weekend emergencies.
