Job Title: Teacher - Elementary

Department: Learning - Elementary

Pay Grade: Teacher's Salary Schedule

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: School Principal

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for ensuring elementary age students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living. This includes supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas, developing lesson plans, delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines, collaborating with other teachers and administrators, and responding to inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Instructs students to improve their success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments, providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Manages student behavior to ensure a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals, providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and achieve established classroom objectives.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations and develop methods for improvement.
  • Administers developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels.
  • Counsels students to improve performance, health status, and problem-solving techniques.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments.
  • Directs student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and/or student workers to address the needs of individual students.
  • Facilitates student learning through defined lesson plans.
  • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents and records in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Participates in meetings and workshops to gather information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares materials documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources to resolve issues and provide information.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a job-related area is required.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

Certificates, Licenses, and Other Special Requirements

  • Possession of Elementary 1-6 Missouri Teacher Certification is required.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance, satisfactory to the District.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios; ability to read technical information, compose documents, and facilitate discussions.
  • Knowledge of appropriate codes, policies, regulations, and laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
  • Skill to perform multiple technical tasks and upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions.
  • Ability to schedule activities, gather and classify data, and use job-related equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving to improve work processes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, set priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and apply logical processes and analytical skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Work environment is primarily inside, with moderate noise and temperature levels.
  • The work is light, requiring exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Must possess the physical ability to perceive sounds, make rational decisions, express ideas verbally, and perform substantial movements with hands and fingers.
  • Additional physical abilities required include balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, hearing, kneeling, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
