Job summary

Rio Grande City School District Transportation Department in Rio Grande City, Texas seeks a full-time Bus Driver to transport students on assigned routes and ensure safe, orderly travel to and from schools.

Required are a valid Texas Class B CDL, ability to pass drug/alcohol tests, and completion of safety training; duties include vehicle checks, supervising students, enforcing rules, and reporting incidents; work may include irregular hours and on-call trainings.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Follows assigned route and adheres to schedules.
• Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities.
• Checks bus for mechanical defects before and after operation.
• Reports accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Completes required reports.
• Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
• Keeps assigned bus clean and fueled.
• Supervises students during boarding, alighting, and crossing.
• Communicates with teachers and parents about student behavior.
• Maintains discipline; reports problems to administrator.
• Instructs students on safe riding rules and regulations.
• Observes traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
• Inspects bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering.
• Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
• Corrects unsafe conditions in work area that cause an accident and informs supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
• Installs snow chains during inclement weather.
• Reports any hazardous conditions along the route.
• Operates two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
• Works irregular hours as needed.
• Attends and completes required training program to maintain safety certification.
• Performs related duties assigned by supervisor.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

REPORTS TO:

Coordinator for Transportation

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Vehicle Operation

• Follows assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
• Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities.
• Checks bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notifies supervisor of needed repairs.
• Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Completes required reports.
• Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
• Keeps assigned bus clean and fueled.

Student Management

• Supervises students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
• Communicates with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus.
• Maintains discipline; reports students discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
• Instructs students on safe riding rules and regulations.

Safety

• Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
• Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
• Insures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
