Job summary

Benjamin Steel Company seeks a Driver to operate tractor-trailer or straight truck, transporting material between plants, warehouses, and customers. You may load/unload and perform basic vehicle maintenance to keep the truck in good working order.

The role requires a valid Class A CDL, DOT physical, and a clean MVR, plus ability to meet physical demands. You will perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections, plan routes, secure loads, and coordinate with supervision for timely deliveries.

Qualifications

• Must be able to work with minimal supervision and follow safety rules.
• Pre-trip and post-trip inspections are required.
• Ability to read and interpret maps, routes, and delivery paperwork.
• Experience with loading/unloading and securing loads is preferred.
• Mechanical aptitude for minor truck maintenance is desirable.

Responsibilities

JOB TITLE: Driver

SUPERVISED BY: Warehouse Superintendent/Warehouse Supervisor

Position Summary

Drives a tractor-trailer or straight truck to transport material, merchandise, equipment, or workers between various establishments such as: Manufacturing plants, mills, warehouses, or between customer's place of business. May also load and unload truck without helpers, make minor mechanical repairs, and keep truck in good working order.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Complete pre-trip inspections prior to driving each day.
• Check orders on truck and plan the shortest and fastest route based on how the truck is loaded.
• Check the weight distribution on each side for legal loads.
• Make sure the load is chained and secured, tarped and properly flagged.
• Be aware of road, traffic, and weather conditions and adjust your driving accordingly.
• Assist in pulling orders, loading and unloading truck.
• Advise Supervisor when delayed at a customer or not able to make planned stops, as well as receiving problems or customer comments.
• Collect all C.O.D.s and return all checks and cash to the office immediately upon your return.
• Perform Warehouse functions when needed and when driving work is not available.
• Keep the truck clean and in proper working condition at all times and report any service concerns immediately.
• Complete post-trip inspection at the close of each day.
• Always be helpful and courteous to all customers and employees.
• Perform other duties as related or assigned for the benefit of the Company.
• Good attendance is an essential function of this job.

Education And Experience

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid Class A CDL, with prior driving experience.
• Mechanical background.
• DOT Physical Exam Card.
• Four points or less on MVR.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Ability to work as a team member without close supervision to meet Company and personal goals.
• Good reading, math, and writing skills, as measured by a pre-employment test, with capability of reading a tape measure, calipers, and road maps.
• Ability to meet physical demands of job which are required 95% of the work day ( i.e. driving, lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, sitting and climbing).
• Ability to present a positive image to our customers as a company representative.
