1st Class Inside Machinist (2nd Shift) - Steel America (Job ID: 760)

Purpose: Steel America is seeking 1st Class Inside Machinists experienced in Manual Machining and/or CNC Mills & Lathes to support operations on 2nd shift in the Inside Machine Shop in Norfolk, VA. Relocation support up to $5,000 is available on a case-by-case basis.

Job Description:
  • Examine blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Perform complex operations on various machine tools, including drill presses, lathes, milling machines, boring machines, and precision grinding machines.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Read precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and indicators.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Select standard materials required for fabrication and machining work.
  • Perform machining operations, monitor production process, and verify finished work against blueprints/specifications.
  • Adjust equipment controls as necessary, verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Set up and operate all types of shop machining tools to manufacture parts.
  • Verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies, assemble parts into complete units.
  • Install machined parts, test operation, and ensure functionality.
  • Develop specifications and drawings for parts or products.
  • Consult with engineers and production staff to resolve machining or assembly issues.
  • Work includes small and large assemblies, machining heavy steel.
  • Apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, machinability, and procedures.
  • Perform machine maintenance, keep work area clean, and report safety issues.
  • Use hand and power tools; work independently; perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents.
  • At least 7 years of experience operating manual or CNC lathes and milling machines.
  • Mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination.
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to write Condition Found Reports (CFR).
  • Knowledge of threading, measuring, and gauging requirements.
  • Skill in selecting, setting up, and operating tools.
  • Effective teamwork and reliability.
  • Own tools and reliable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience.
  • Knowledge of CNC programming and Siemens controls.
  • Experience with GibbsCAM software.
Physical and Travel Requirements:
  • Ability to lift at least 20 lbs, work in extreme environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, confined spaces.
  • Operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts.
  • Stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, and work in various conditions.
