Job summary

Mills Marine is seeking a Marine Deck Electrician for Newport News, VA and surrounding bases. You will install, diagnose, repair, and test shipboard electrical systems on Navy and commercial vessels, reading schematics and wiring diagrams to ensure safe, compliant operations.

The role requires 2+ years of marine electrical experience, ability to work 8–12 hour shifts, and willingness to overtime. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with safety certifications preferred.

Qualifications

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; OSHA Maritime/CPR/First Aid preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of marine/shipyard electrical experience; ability to obtain shipyard access credentials.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Marine Deck Electrician is a skilled trades position responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of electrical systems and equipment aboard U.S. Navy and commercial vessels. This role supports new construction, maintenance, modernization, and repair projects while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with customer specifications, shipyard standards, and applicable electrical codes. Marine Deck Electricians play a vital role in supporting mission readiness by delivering quality workmanship and maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

What will you Do?
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and test shipboard electrical systems and equipment.
  • Read, interpret, and work from electrical drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Install and terminate electrical cables, connectors, panels, switchboards, lighting systems, motors, and control equipment.
  • Perform continuity, insulation resistance, voltage, and operational testing using appropriate electrical test equipment.
  • Troubleshoot electrical faults and determine corrective actions to restore system functionality.
  • Remove and replace damaged or obsolete electrical components and wiring.
  • Route, secure, and label electrical cables in accordance with shipyard specifications and customer requirements.
  • Ensure all work complies with NAVSEA standards, OSHA regulations, and company safety policies.
  • Maintain accountability for assigned tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Work safely in confined spaces, elevated areas, and aboard vessels under construction or repair.
  • Coordinate work activities with supervisors, production teams, and other trades to ensure project schedules are met.
  • Complete required documentation and quality control inspections.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Electrical Foreman or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • Ability to read and write effectively.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2years of marine electrical, shipyard electrical, industrial electrical, or related experience, preferably in a shipboard environment.
  • Experience installing and troubleshooting shipboard electrical systems preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety procedures, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and safe work practices.
  • Ability to safely operate electrical testing equipment and power tools.
  • OSHA Maritime, CPR/First Aid, or other applicable certifications are preferred but not required.
  • Ability to obtain all required shipyard access credentials.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated locations, and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to distinguish wire colors and identify electrical components.
  • Continuous visual awareness and mental focus.
  • Ability to work 8–12-hour shifts.
  • Availability to work 5–7 days per week, including overtime as needed.
Employment Requirements
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Required physical examination and respirator fit testing.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Background check, including verification of the past seven years of employment history.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain shipyard and military installation access credentials.
  • Security Clearance: Not Required
