Big Bus Tours New York City is seeking an experienced Part-Time Independent Contractor as a 19-A Certified Examiner to ensure drivers meet NYC regulatory standards and maintain audit-ready records. The role collaborates with Operations, Training, Fleet, and HR to drive safety and compliance for double-decker and passenger vehicles in a fast-paced city setting.

Qualifications

  • Current New York State Article 19-A Examiner certification required.
  • Valid New York State CDL Class A or Class B with Passenger endorsement.
  • Strong knowledge of NYS Article 19-A, DMV, and DOT requirements.
  • Experience operating and/or evaluating commercial passenger vehicles; double-decker buses preferred.
  • Experience conducting commercial driver road tests preferred.
  • Strong understanding of defensive driving and passenger safety.
  • Excellent organizational, record-keeping, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with drivers, Operations, and management.
  • Ability to manage multiple regulatory requirements while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Previous experience in transit, motor coach, charter, sightseeing, school bus, transportation safety, driver training, or fleet operations preferred.
  • Experience working in a unionized transportation environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive Article 19-A examinations and road tests in accordance with New York State requirements, including evaluating drivers operating double-decker buses.
  • Evaluate driver performance, including vehicle control, passenger safety, defensive driving, and compliance with traffic regulations in a busy New York City environment.
  • Review and monitor driver qualification documentation, including CDL status and endorsements, medical certifications, abstracts, examination results, and required training.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and audit-ready records of examinations, qualifications, and compliance documentation.
  • Identify missing or expiring documentation and coordinate timely resolution with drivers and Operations.
  • Provide clear and professional feedback regarding examination results, safety expectations, and areas requiring additional training or remediation.
  • Support new-hire driver qualification, onboarding, refresher training, and other driver development initiatives.
  • Serve as a resource for Article 19-A, CDL, NYS DMV, DOT, and applicable passenger transportation regulations.
  • Assist with regulatory audits, inspections, and accident or incident follow-up related to driver qualification or performance.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Fleet/Maintenance to address driver qualification, safety, scheduling, and vehicle-related concerns.
  • Stay current on regulatory requirements, safety standards, and industry best practices.
  • Support special events, seasonal hiring, and other operational needs as required.

Big Bus Tours New York City is seeking an experienced Part-Time Independent Contractor as our 19-A Certified Examiner. The 19-A Examiner will work closely with Operations, Training, Fleet, and Human Resources to ensure drivers are properly qualified, examinations are completed on schedule, and all required records are accurate and audit-ready.

  • Conduct comprehensive Article 19-A examinations and road tests in accordance with New York State requirements, including evaluating drivers operating double-decker buses.
