Job summary

Dallas County is seeking a maintenance assistant to support building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, and air conditioning. You will respond to emergency calls during evenings, midnights, and weekends, and assist with various facilities tasks across the jail complex.

The role requires basic maintenance experience or formal training, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid Texas driver’s license. You must be able to work rotating days/shifts and pass a security clearance check.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited High School/GED.
  • 6 months of general maintenance experience in a mechanical field or 1 year of related training (or a combination).
  • Six months of work-related experience can substitute for six months of formal training or any combination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform minor maintenance and emergency repairs to buildings, plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems.
  • Log, inspect, and maintain building mechanical equipment; monitor meters and system operations.
  • Work on jail doors; adjust/repair door mechanisms as needed.
  • Inspect main and auxiliary mechanical systems including boilers, condensate tanks and pumps.
  • Conduct weekly and monthly operational maintenance inspections.
  • Complete required reports and perform other duties as assigned.

Assists maintenance personnel in all areas of building maintenance including plumbing, electrical and air conditioning. Responds to emergency calls during evening, midnight and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Performs minor maintenance, makes emergency repairs and adjustments to buildings, plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. Coordinates with On Call supervisor for assistance as needed.
  • Performs scanning, logging, inspections and/or maintenance of building mechanical equipment: logs meter readings, checks consoles and floor units for proper operation.
  • Works on jail doors: adjusting, repairing parts of door mechanisms, as necessary.
  • Performs inspections on main and auxiliary mechanical systems, including air conditioning, boiler condensation tanks and pumps.
  • Performs weekly and monthly operational and maintenance inspections.
  • Maintains and completes reports, as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education, Experience and Training:

Graduation from an accredited High School/GED program. 6 months of general maintenance experience in a mechanical field not limited to building maintenance or one (1) year of formal work-related training or a combination of the two (per Facilities hiring/promotion matrix).

Special Note:

Six (6) months of work related experience can substitute for six (6) months of formal training or any combination of the two.

Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must have a valid Texas Drivers License and good driving record. Must maintain a good driving record and remain in compliance with Article II, Subdivision II of Chapter 90 of the Dallas County Code. Must provide a 10-year driving history. Must pass a security clearance check. Position is required to work rotating days/shifts.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

Ability to climb ladders and lift weights in excess of 50 lbs. assisted. Ability to operate equipment efficiently and safely. Ability to withstand prolonged sitting, standing, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, stretching, lifting and climbing ladders. Must be able to work in varying conditions surroundings, and all weather conditions.
