ROLE OVERVIEW
We’re looking for a hands‑on R&D Mechanical Engineer to design and build a variable-angle wind tunnel for testing our VTOL delivery drones. The wind tunnel will generate controlled wind speeds and directions while the aircraft remains mounted on a force‑measurement test stand. The complete system will include motors, propellers, structural frames, airflow components, force sensors, actuators, and a large pivoting mechanism that allows the wind angle to be adjusted automatically. This is a highly practical role involving CAD design, prototyping, fabrication, assembly, instrumentation, testing, and continuous improvement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design the complete wind tunnel structure and airflow system
- Select and integrate motors, propellers, bearings, actuators, belts, gears, and structural components
- Develop a pivoting mechanism that can automatically change the wind tunnel angle
- Design test stands and fixtures for mounting VTOL aircraft
- Integrate force sensors and other measurement equipment into the test setup
- Create parts and assemblies in SolidWorks
- Produce components using 3D printing, CNC machining, sheet materials, and workshop fabrication
- Assemble, modify, and troubleshoot the physical system
- Conduct airflow, vibration, structural, and mechanical tests
- Work closely with flight‑control and embedded‑software engineers to integrate the wind tunnel into our verification pipeline
- Improve the system based on test results and experimental data
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field
- Strong SolidWorks or equivalent CAD skills
- Experience designing and building mechanical systems or test equipment
- Familiarity with motors, propellers, bearings, belts, gears, actuators, and structural assemblies
- Experience with 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and workshop fabrication
- Comfortable using workshop tools such as drills, Dremels, saws, adhesives, and hand tools
- Good understanding of mechanical loads, vibration, tolerances, airflow, and structural design
- Experience with wind tunnels, test rigs, drones, robotics, or aerospace systems is a plus
- Strong problem‑solving skills and a practical, hands‑on approach
