TankX is a quantitative trading firm building high-performance systems for digital asset markets.
Our engineers work on problems where latency, reliability, correctness and risk have direct consequences in production. We operate with small teams, direct communication and a high level of individual ownership.
We expect engineers not only to build systems, but to understand how those systems behave, develop sound technical judgement and follow problems through to their outcome in production.
We are looking for an Engineering Manager who can strengthen both the capability of our engineering team and the quality of the systems we build.
The Role
As an Engineering Manager at TankX, you’ll be responsible for helping engineers grow into increasingly independent, high-judgement contributors while improving the effectiveness and execution of the team as a whole.
A significant part of your impact will come through technical leadership, coaching, clear expectations, feedback and performance management. You’ll help engineers build stronger problem-solving habits, understand the wider context behind their work and take increasing ownership of technical outcomes.
You’ll initially report directly to our co-founder and work closely with our Lead Quantitative Developer and other technical contributors. As our engineering leadership structure evolves, the role may transition to reporting to a Head of Engineering.
You won’t be expected to be the primary implementer. Your role is to combine strong people leadership with enough technical depth to improve the quality of decisions and execution across the team.
Ownership at TankX does not stop at implementation or deployment. You’ll help ensure engineers understand how their systems behave in production, investigate unexpected outcomes and follow important issues through to resolution.
What You’ll Do
- Own the engineering team’s delivery effectiveness by understanding the intended outcome, translating priorities into clear technical plans, milestones, ownership and realistic timelines; improve planning and estimation, and ensure technical risks, dependencies and uncertainty are surfaced early.
- Help engineers move from executing well-defined tasks toward understanding context, identifying risks and proposing their own solutions.
- Help engineers break down difficult problems and unblock complex technical work without becoming the default solution to every problem.
- Set clear expectations for engineers around technical quality, ownership, communication and execution and help the team consistently work toward that standard.
- Coach engineers at different stages of their careers, to move beyond task execution: understand the problem and context, form their own view, identify risks, propose solutions and know when to decide independently versus when to involve others.
- Run regular 1:1s, provide timely and direct feedback, and actively manage individual development and performance, reinforce effective behaviours and create space for open two-way feedback.
- Work closely with technical leads and strong individual contributors to turn technical expertise into broader team capability rather than individual dependency.
- Identify capability and seniority needs within the team and contribute actively to hiring the right talent.
- Strengthen knowledge-sharing, onboarding and distribution of technical context to help engineers build context quickly, make informed decisions and take broader ownership across the team.
- Stay close enough to the systems to contribute meaningfully to architecture discussions, system design, technical reviews and important engineering decisions, particularly where latency, reliability, correctness, complexity or operational risk matter.
- Establish lightweight, risk-proportionate engineering practices around design and code review, testing, deployment, change management and production readiness, adding processes where it improves reliability and decision quality, not for its own sake.
- Ensure production systems have appropriate observability, monitoring, alerting and operational visibility so failures, degradation and unexpected behaviour can be detected, understood and acted on quickly.
- Raise standards around system design, code quality, testing, observability and production readiness.
- Turn recurring failures or incidents into lasting improvements to systems, tools or engineering practices.
- Work closely with quantitative researchers, engineers and company leadership to connect technical execution with wider trading and company priorities.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong software engineering experience building and operating complex production systems.
- Demonstrated experience managing and developing software engineers, including coaching, feedback and performance management.
- Experience owning both people leadership and team execution, including prioritisation, planning, delivery and competing technical priorities.
- Experience helping less experienced engineers develop stronger technical judgement and independence.
- Strong technical foundation in C++.
- Strong understanding of:
- concurrency and multithreading
- networking
- distributed or real-time systems
- performance optimisation
- Experience making or contributing to consequential architectural and technical decisions.
- Ability to distinguish when to coach, when to challenge, when to delegate and when to step in directly.
- Ability to drive discussions toward clear decisions and next steps while preserving ownership within the team.
- Experience establishing effective engineering standards and delivery practices without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
- Ability to identify organisational bottlenecks, concentrated knowledge and unclear ownership, and turn them into concrete improvements.
- Ability to balance short-term trading priorities and delivery needs with longer-term system maintainability, reliability and engineering health.
- Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to reason beyond an individual implementation and understand wider system impact.
- Clear and direct communication, including the ability to give difficult feedback constructively.
- Professional fluency in English.
- Experience owning not only people management but also team execution and delivery, including prioritisation, planning and managing competing technical priorities.
- Experience establishing engineering standards without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
- Ability to identify organisational bottlenecks, knowledge concentration and unclear ownership, and turn them into concrete improvements.
- Ability to balance short-term trading or product priorities with longer-term system maintainability and engineering health.
We care more about demonstrated leadership capability than a specific management title. Strong technical experience is essential, but this role also requires proven people leadership and ownership of team execution and delivery.
Nice to Have
Experience with one or more of the following:
- Low-latency or high-performance systems
- Electronic or quantitative trading
- Market data, pricing or execution systems
- Exchange connectivity
- Market making
- Digital asset markets
- Developing junior and mid-level engineers into senior contributors
- Hiring senior technical talent
Previous trading experience is valuable, but not required. Strong engineering fundamentals, people leadership and the ability to develop engineering capability matter more.
How We Work at TankX
