Job summary

Singapore Management University seeks a Research Fellow to work with the Lead PI on a wearable-sensing project assessing urban density and neighbourhood amenities in Singapore.

You will conduct qualitative and quantitative fieldwork, manage sensors and surveys, and contribute to publications while coordinating with government and stakeholders. Experience with wearables, mixed-methods, and urban planning is essential.

Qualifications

• PhD in urban planning, urban studies, or a closely related field (completed or near completion).
• Hands-on experience collecting data at scale in the field using wearables and mobile sensing.
• Strong mixed-methods research skills spanning study design, recruitment, and data analysis.
• Excellent written communication skills and publication track record.
• Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder or multi-agency projects, including engagement with government.
• Interest in smart cities and Southeast Asian urban contexts.

Responsibilities

• Qualitative and field research: design and pilot participant-facing survey instruments; recruit and support participants across neighbourhoods; run outdoor walking studies; engage government agencies and stakeholders.
• Quantitative research: deploy wearable/mobile sensing, GPS, and physiological sensors; implement context-aware surveys; ensure data quality and integrate datasets.
• Project management: coord with PIs; assist with IRB approvals; organise stakeholder workshops; liaise with project partners; annual reporting.
• Publishing: draft papers for top-tier journals and deliver final project outputs.
• People management: supervise research assistants and fieldwork staff.
• Other ad hoc tasks to support project success.
