The Training Contract is a professional requirement of the Law Society of Singapore to enable law graduates as advocate & solicitors. The Contract is designed to give trainees background and experience in the various legal sectors that they are likely to work in such as dispute resolution (litigation, arbitration), company and commercial law, conveyancing, etc.
A Trainee Solicitor does not have many actual responsibilities because, by definition, he/she is not yet qualified to provide legal advice to the public. He or She will be given a wide variety of tasks which he/she will perform under close supervision by a director or senior associate. The intention is that he learns to advise on different areas of the law and prepare documents such as pleadings and litigation, commercial agreements.
As stated above, the intention of the Training Contract is essentially to teach the trainee how to practice law, including negotiation skills, drafting skills, and, if the Trainee obtains a “Part Call”, advocacy skills.
