Job description

The IT (Network Infrastructure) Engineer is responsible for ensuring 24/7 server availability and network stability to support our global platform for pathogen data sharing. This role focuses on setting up, deploying, and maintaining virtual machines based on data submission demands, while managing networks and network service providers to ensure uninterrupted connectivity.

The candidate will work closely with compute engineers, system administrators, and scientific teams to ensure reliable, scalable, and secure network operations that support continuous global access to genomic data.

Job Responsibilities
  • Set up, configure, and deploy virtual machines in response to varying data submission and processing loads.
  • Monitor and manage network infrastructure to ensure continuous server availability and minimize downtime.
  • Manage relationships with network providers and ensure service-level agreements (SLAs) are met.
  • Implement network security measures, including firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
  • Troubleshoot network issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to restore services promptly.
  • Conduct regular performance assessments and capacity planning to anticipate infrastructure scaling needs.
  • Support disaster recovery and failover mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted platform operation.
  • Collaborate with compute and application teams to integrate network services with backend systems.
  • Maintain documentation of network configurations, performance logs, and provider agreements.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in networking, virtualization, and infrastructure automation.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor degree in Information Technology, Computer Networking, Systems Engineering, or a related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong technical background in networking (LAN, WAN, VPNs, firewalls, and routing protocols etc).
  • Experience with virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, KVM, Hyper-V, or cloud equivalents).
  • Familiarity with server load balancing, redundancy, and failover solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with network monitoring tools and diagnostic utilities.
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix environments and system administration.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and network security implementation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with ability to respond effectively under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, global team.
  • Motivation to support global health research by ensuring robust and secure network infrastructure.
