Job description
About the Opportunity

Our client is a global technology innovator known for solving some of the hardest challenges in high-precision imaging and photonics. The company’s R&D teams design and build sophisticated optical and inspection platforms that define the performance standards of the semiconductor industry and beyond. They are seeking a Staff / Senior Imaging Systems Engineer to join their R&D team. This role offers the chance to work on cutting‑edge optical and electro‑optical systems that enable breakthroughs across high‑precision technology sectors.

You’ll play a key role in the end-to-end development of next‑generation optical systems — from conceptual design through to manufacturing integration — translating theoretical optical principles into robust, scalable, and high‑performance solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the architectural design and optical system development of advanced imaging, illumination, and beam delivery subsystems.
  • Perform detailed modelling and simulation to optimise performance metrics such as wavefront error, diffraction‑limited spot size, polarisation effects, and throughput.
  • Develop comprehensive tolerance and error budgets using statistical analysis to ensure design robustness and manufacturability.
  • Conduct stray light and ghost image analysis using non‑sequential ray tracing tools and implement effective mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including mechanical engineering, metrology, and manufacturing, to specify components and define optical assembly procedures.
  • Analyse experimental data to validate optical models and troubleshoot performance issues using tools such as MATLAB or Python.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Advanced degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline (Ph.D. preferred; M.S. required).
  • Minimum 3+ years (M.S.) or 5+ years (B.S.) of experience in optical system design and analysis for real‑world applications.
  • Proficiency in at least one major optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V, Synopsys OS, or equivalent).
  • Proven expertise in:
  • Statistical tolerance analysis and error budgeting
  • Stray light and ghost reflection modelling
  • Optical manufacturability and metrology‑based specification
  • Precision opto‑mechanical integration
  • Strong data analysis and scripting skills (MATLAB, Python, or similar).
Highly Desirable Skills
  • Hands‑on experience with optical testing and interferometry.
  • Deep understanding of polarisation ray tracing and its impact on system design.
  • Experience designing diverse optical architectures, including high‑NA objectives, zoom lenses, or complex beam paths.
