With a population approaching 700 million, Southeast Asia is increasingly attracting investment interest from Japanese companies. As Japan faces ongoing challenges from an aging and shrinking population, expanding overseas operations has become essential for Japanese consumer business companies aiming for sustained growth. Southeast Asia, with its large economic zone and geographic and cultural proximity, stands out as a key region for Japanese consumer‑focused companies.

However, many categories within the Southeast Asian consumer business market are already dominated by major global corporations, and local leading companies have been strengthening their presence as well. Establishing and expanding Japanese consumer businesses in this competitive environment is no simple task.

Additionally, the unique characteristics of Southeast Asian markets pose significant challenges for Japanese companies seeking to leverage their existing strengths. For example:

In several key Southeast Asian countries, traditional trade remains highly influential, unlike in Japan, where modern trade has long been predominant. This means that simply transplanting domestic knowledge, expertise, and systems will not be effective.

Furthermore, each country varies in religion, language, lifestyle, income levels, logistics, and foreign ownership regulations, making Southeast Asia a collection of diverse, mid‑sized markets rather than a single, unified region.

As a result, Japanese companies face unique management challenges that don’t exist domestically, such as achieving the right balance between country‑specific customization and regional standardization across all aspects of business—from organizational structure and operational models to IT infrastructure and talent development.

  • Development of business and market entry strategies, and channel strategy formulation
  • Planning and execution of sales operations reform and digitalization
  • Designing and implementing distribution structure transformation
  • Digitalization and enhancement of consumer touchpoints and engagement
  • Optimization of trade promotions
  • Strategy formulation and execution for M&A, alliances, and partnerships with startups

As a Manager, you will demonstrate leadership in a mixed team of local and JCS members, managing projects while using personal strengths to support project and client development.

Requirements

Extensive consulting experience in strategy and operations within the consumer goods and food & beverage industries

Focus Area:

  • Services in growth strategy, mid‑term planning, sales transformation, marketing, and supply chain management (SCM) reform
  • Channel strategy (including omnichannel approaches)
  • Development of global strategy and operational structures

Proven track record of contributing to securing projects through proposal activities

Experience in leading projects

Native level Japanese and business level English or native level English and business level Japanese

In-depth consulting experience in a specific industry (technology, consumer, manufacturing, etc.)
