Job summary

Wise is seeking a Software Engineer to help ship direct customer touch points on one of its most impactful products. You will focus on the core cards flow, onboarding experiences, and building tooling for global expansion.

You should have 3+ years of backend experience, strong Java 17+ and Spring skills, and a product-minded, data-driven approach. Expect collaborative work across Operations, Finance, and Customer Support.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of hands-on experience developing backend driven applications.
• Strong product mindset with a focus on user experience and data-driven decisions.
• Excellent communication and ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Experience with Java 17+ and Spring framework.
• Experience designing schemas and query optimisation for relational databases.
• Familiarity with Continuous Delivery practices and Test Driven Development.

Responsibilities

• Ship direct customer touch points on Wise's products and scale core card flows.
• Build seamless experiences for customers onboarding to Wise cards and using them.
• Create tooling to support Wise Operations for global expansion.
• Write clear, testable code and maintain high performance and maintainability.
• Identify and tackle customer problems, coordinating with other teams on cross-cutting issues.
• Drive product improvements affecting customer experience and internal stakeholders.

About The Spend Squad
We build products that allow our customers to spend their money anywhere in the world. We currently process about £34 billion annually and issue cards to over 40 countries. We are also building out features which localise the spending experience no matter where you are.
As a Software Engineer, you would be responsible for shipping the direct customer touch points on one of Wise's most impactful products and highest growth products.

How you’ll be contributing to our Engineering team:

Help us take Wise to the next level as we scale to impact 100's of millions more customers. You'll hide away all complexities under the hood of our product and build seamless experiences for our customers

Working on the core cards flow of Wise, growing our user base who uses cards. You'll ensure our customers get the best experience onboarding to cards and using it for the first time. You will also help with building efficient tooling for our Operations team to support global expansion

Create clear and helpful interfaces and documents, whilst maintaining consistency, maintainability, performance and an understanding of what problems our customers might encounter along the way

Take initiative to identify and solve important customer problems, while coordinating with other teams on solving cross-cutting technical issues

Drive product improvement that impacts the Wise customer experience or empowers internal stakeholders (teams like Operations, Customer Support, Finance, etc.) to do their job effectively

Proactively identify and tackle technical debt becoming too big through planning work and aligning the team. Does this with careful evaluation of additional cost on development

Qualifications

What does it take?:

At least 3 years of hands‑on experience developing backend driven applications

You approach your work with a strong product mindset and passion for user experience, you prioritise work with the customers in mind and make data‑driven decisions to fix a customer pain‑points

You have great communication skills and can articulate complex, technical concepts to non‑technical audience

You enjoy writing testable code and believe in Test Driven Development

You believe in and follow best coding practices, code reviews and open feedback

You provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid‑level developers

You have solid Java 17+ knowledge and experience with Spring framework

You have experience working with relational databases, query optimisation and designing schema

You are familiar with Continuous Delivery Approach mindset

…but don’t worry we don’t expect you to know everything!

Some extra skills that would be great:

You have experience with financial systems

You have knowledge of PostgreSQL, advanced types and query features

You know your way around event driven architecture

You have some Groovy experience
