Job summary

Grab is seeking an experienced Senior Backend Software Engineer for the Payments FundsCore team in Singapore. You will build scalable distributed systems powering Grab's payment platform, payouts, and ledgers, with a focus on correctness, consistency, reliability, and performance.

You will report to the Engineering Manager II and work on-site at Grab's Singapore office, contributing to architectural decisions and driving engineering best practices across teams.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
• At least five years of software development experience.
• Proficiency in Go (preferred) or Java, with willingness to stay current.
• CS fundamentals: algorithms and data structures; apply them effectively.
• Focus on edge cases, failure scenarios, and system recovery.
• Understanding of clean architecture and data-intensive design; large-scale processing.
• Experience with relational/NoSQL databases, caching, and distributed services.
• Experience with microservices, cloud platforms (AWS), and DevOps practices.
• Design systems meeting observability, availability, security, and governance needs.
• Produce clear technical design docs and runbooks.
• Experience using Generative AI to boost productivity.

The Payments FundsCore team consolidates Grab's diverse payment stacks into a single, cohesive payment platform - the financial backbone that powers transactions across all of Grab's teams and partners. We manage critical platform components, including the Payment Platform, Driver Payouts, and Fee Platform, and the Driver and Delivery Partner ledger that underpins Grab's payment capabilities. We build and operate distributed systems that process millions of transactions daily, where correctness, consistency, and scale are non-negotiable. Concepts like Idempotency, Two-Phase Commit, Event Sourcing, and the Saga pattern are central to the systems we design and evolve.

Get to Know the Role

We're looking for an experienced Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Payments FundsCore engineering team in Singapore.

You’ll build scalable distributed systems that form Grab's financial backbone, including the Payment Platform, Driver Payouts, Fee Platform, and Dax ledger. You’ll take ownership of critical backend services that process millions of transactions daily, ensuring correctness, consistency, reliability, and performance. You’ll solve complex payment challenges using concepts such as idempotency, two-phase commit, event sourcing, and the Saga pattern. You’ll also collaborate with engineers and partners to evolve Grab's unified payment platform.

You will report to the Engineering Manager II and work on-site at Grab's Singapore office.

The Critical Tasks You Will Perform

• Develop scalable backend systems that meet business and non-functional requirements, including reliability, security, and performance.
• Write clean, efficient, testable, and maintainable code to solve complex FinTech and payment-platform challenges.
• Build distributed systems that prioritise transaction correctness and consistency, applying patterns such as idempotency, event sourcing, and Saga.
• Collaborate with teams to deliver new capabilities.
• Conduct code reviews, maintain technical documentation, and promote knowledge sharing and engineering best practices.
• Diagnose complex production issues, create fixes, and implement sustainable solutions that prevent recurrence.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and the technical direction of projects and services.
• Strengthen system reliability through observability, automation, and operational improvements. We require participation in the on-call rotation.
• Support deployment and operational processes to maintain system health and performance.
• Mentor junior engineers and interns, promoting learning and improvement.
• Stay current with latest technologies and use Generative AI tools responsibly to improve engineering productivity and system capabilities.

What Essential Skills You Will Need

• A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least five years of relevant software development experience.
• Proficiency in Go (preferred), Java, or another major programming language, along with the willingness to participate in professional development activities to stay current on industry knowledge.
• Computer science fundamentals, including algorithms and data structures, and the ability to apply them.

• Experience writing efficient, maintainable, and thoroughly tested code using appropriate abstractions and SOLID principles.

• Practical experience with microservices, cloud platforms such as AWS, and DevOps practices.
• Experience designing systems that meet observability, availability, security, data governance, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
• Produce clear technical design documents and maintain operational documentation, including runbooks.
• Experience using Generative AI tools responsibly to improve engineering productivity and project delivery.
• We prefer knowledge of or experience in FinTech and payment systems.
