Job summary

Liberty Specialty Markets is seeking a Senior Risk Engineer to provide technical support to underwriting and claims teams for the Casualty line of business. The role includes desk reviews, on-site risk engineering surveys, and reporting to enable accurate underwriting decisions.

The candidate will assess third-party exposure, mentor risk engineers, and contribute to claims mitigation while staying current with regulatory developments and best practices.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in the General (non-Life) Insurance industry.
  • Experience in managerial, technical, or consultancy roles related to risk.
  • Strong analytical and surveying capabilities for risk assessments.
  • Proficient in PC-based systems and data management.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform risk appraisals for Casualty lines to support underwriting.
  • Conduct on-site risk surveys for clients and prepare reports per Liberty guidelines.
  • Provide technical input to claims for mitigation and improvement recommendations.
  • Collaborate with underwriters, claims, and brokers to promote integrated services.
  • Deliver training to Risk Engineers and present to brokers and stakeholders.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of casualty risk practices and regulatory developments.

Job description

Under limited direction, the Senior Risk Engineer provides technical support to Underwriting and Claims teams for the Casualty line of business. This role performs the planning, organising, analysis and evaluation of risks, regardless of complexity, both on a desk review basis and on-site risk engineering surveys to provide risk assessments to enable Underwriters to make accurate and profitable underwriting decisions. Also provides risk analysis for claims mitigation. In this role the engineer must assess the potential for 3rd party liability exposures with a focus on General and Product Liability.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, organise, and perform desk-based risk appraisals for the Casualty line of business to provide risk analysis information to Underwriters. The risk appraisal process includes the analysis of 3rd party exposures associated with a risk and comment on adequacy of mitigation measures.
  • Conduct on-site risk engineering surveys for existing and prospective Clients, as required by Underwriters. Produces either a brief summary report for internal use or a detailed marketing risk engineering survey report for Underwriters, Brokers, or the Client, as required by Liberty guidelines.
  • Assume ownership for allocated accounts including attendance on surveys, follow-up of key recommendations and ensure that risk engineering information on file is up to date.
  • Provide technical input on claims including the review of claims reports and site visits to identify areas for claims mitigation and recommendations for improvement based on current risk engineering practices, policies and lessons learned. These recommendations are to be communicated to other Engineers/Underwriters and will provide the basis for future improvements of risk engineering policies, procedures, and technical resources.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the Casualty line of business including operational practices, safety management systems, claims trends, legal and regulatory developments, and other related issues that may impact the underwriting decision-making process or Liberty profitability. The job holder is required to actively pursue continued professional development in order to develop and maintain knowledge in these areas.
  • Participate in business development and marketing activities for the Casualty line of business.
  • Work closely with claims department, Underwriters, and all other key internal stakeholders to promote Liberty's \"integrated business unit approach\" and ensure seamless delivery of risk engineering services.
  • Provide technical training and guidance to Risk Engineers where needed.
  • Compile and present training to brokers and industry stakeholders on relevant topics as required.
  • Contribute to an effective team environment by interacting professionally with all team members, within and outside the assigned line of business, and providing development, support and assistance as required.
  • Demonstrate behavior at all times in line with the Liberty core values.
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal, statutory, and corporate affairs requirements on a timely basis.
  • Take responsibility and showing initiative in the development of your technical and soft skills.
  • Continue to seek improvement of the product and of self by the continuous improvement of practices and processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by your manager or other appropriate officer.
Experience & Skills
  • Significant relevant experience in the General (non-Life) Insurance industry preferable.
  • Significant relevant experience in an aligned role with a background in one of the following areas in a managerial, technical or consultancy role: Operations, Maintenance, Process Engineering, Loss Prevention, Construction, Risk Management or Project Management.
  • Excellent working knowledge of PC based systems and applications such as Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database systems for managing contacts, schedules and calendars is required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in a technical discipline, such as Chemical, Process, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
