Are you passionate about shaping a more gender-equitable society in Singapore? Do you have a strong background in research and analysis, with an advocacy lens? AWARE is seeking a Senior Researcher to join our dynamic Advocacy and Research (A&R) team. This is an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge work on gender equality and women’s rights in Singapore.

About the Role

As a Senior Researcher, you will play a key role in driving AWARE’s research and policy advocacy initiatives. You will oversee research projects and work closely with the A&R team to support our engagement with decision-makers, the media, and the public. Your work will help to inform and influence legal, policy, and social reforms that align with AWARE’s mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Research Initiatives: Conceptualise, design, and conduct robust research and analysis on laws, policies, and social practices related to gender equality and women’s rights in Singapore, utilising both primary and secondary research. Ensure all research is approached through a feminist lens, and that outputs are sound, rigorous, and effectively support AWARE’s advocacy goals.
  • Research Outputs: Produce high-quality research reports, policy briefs, and position papers. Work closely with the Communications Team to frame and communicate research findings through press releases, op-eds, and other media materials.
  • Policy Monitoring and Analysis: Monitor legislative and policy developments to identify opportunities and challenges for advancing gender equality and women’s rights. Provide timely analysis and recommendations to inform AWARE’s policy positions.
  • Knowledge Development and Data Management: Lead efforts in knowledge management, ensuring that research data and findings are systematically organised, accessible, and effectively used to support AWARE’s advocacy efforts.
  • Strategic Advocacy Support: Collaborate with the Director of A&R to develop and implement advocacy strategies that align with AWARE’s broader organisational goals. Lead the formulation and execution of research-driven advocacy campaigns.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders to support research and advocacy efforts, including government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and other partners. Represent AWARE at conferences, workshops, and external meetings to advocate for gender-equitable policies.
  • Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers, fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.
  • Team Collaboration: Actively contribute to the A&R team’s strategic discussions and initiatives.
Preferred Candidate Profile
  • Singapore Citizen/Permanent Resident.
  • About 5-7 years of experience in research in sociology and/or public policy, with a focus on gender or women’s issues.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field such as sociology or public policy.
  • Exceptional research and analytical skills, with a strong understanding of gender-related policies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Malay, Tamil, or Mandarin is an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of Singapore’s political and policy landscape.
  • Experience in conceptualising, designing and leading research projects.
  • 3-5 years experience in a managerial role (e.g. managing researchers, leading projects, or overseeing research strategy).
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to gender equality and women’s rights, aligned with AWARE’s values.
