Job description
What the role is

The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) is a division of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). At CCRS, our mission is to advance scientific understanding of tropical climate variability and change and its associated weather systems affecting Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia region, so that the knowledge and expertise can benefit decision makers and the community. Our vision is to be a world leading centre in tropical climate and weather research focusing on the Southeast Asia region.

CCRS is offering an exciting job opportunity for a scientist with a strong background in AI/ML and its application to climate, as well as good knowledge of climate variability and change in the tropics with focus on Southeast Asia. As part of the Department of Climate Research (DCR), the Climate Projections and Extremes Branch (CPEB) focuses on climate processes relevant to Singapore and the Southeast Asian region and developing next generation high resolution regional climate change projections for its stakeholders.

A core component of the work is the application of AI/ML methods for climate and climate change time scales, especially as part of the new AI-based production of high-resolution regional climate change projections.

We are therefore seeking an experienced scientist with a strong background in the application of AI/ML in climate science as well as an understanding of climate variability and change (especially for tropical regions such as Southeast Asia).

What you will be working on

The job scope will include but not limited to the following:

  • Implement AI/ML methods on our HPC system; train the AI/ML models and test their capabilities
  • Benchmarking of climate and downscaling AI/ML models for use in climate projections
  • Contribute to the analysis of climate simulations using both standard as well as ML methods
  • Contribute to research on climate variability and change (including tropical processes) as guided by the BH and HOD
  • Contribute to CPE Branch strategic planning through contributions to annual work plans, end of year reports, regular meetings with BH CPE Branch and other relevant staff.
  • Contribute to support, nurture and developing of other scientists in the CPE Branch, regarding AI/ML applications.
  • Contribute to effective stakeholder engagement
What we are looking for

The job might be for you if you possess the following:

  • PhD/MSc degree in computer science, physical sciences and research experience in application of AI in climate, atmospheric/oceanic science, or meteorology
  • High proficiency in scientific computing, especially PYTHON, with experience applying AI/ML libraries
  • Experience working on HPC systems (linux, bash, CDO, etc)
  • Experience in publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals
  • Versatile and creative verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate detailed technical/ scientific information into easily understood, engaging, influential and informative article/programme to a broad audience
  • Ability to work effectively to deadlines on individual projects and as part of a diverse team.
  • Interest and passion to deliver relevant R&D for societal benefits.
  • Ability to network effectively with the local and international research community.
  • Ability to engage and communicate with scientists and stakeholders from diverse communities.

Please send in samples of past work, clearly stating the areas of your involvement.

As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.
