Job description
Responsibilities
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker will need to be able to manage complex cases as independently as possible (e.g. multi-agency cases, high profile media cases etc.) with some supervision from their reporting officer/ Head of department.
  • To apply social work ethics and values, social policies and legislation in their daily work and to be able to work in a multi-cultural society.
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker is expected to undertake an advocacy role for the patients that they work with.
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker would need to be a subject matter resource person for their area of specialization.
Clinical Supervision
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker will need to be able to supervise and guide Grade 12 Medical Social Workers, social work coordinators and social work assistants and students intern to handle noncomplex cases.
Group Work
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker will need to be able to lead and develop and conduct group work in their area of specialization as independently as possible.
Community Work
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker would need to be able build relationships with community stakeholders and gather community resources to derive common solutions to improve outcomes and processes of community work.
Education and Research
  • Internal - The Senior Medical Social Worker would need to be able to plan and conduct training for internal campus staff based on learning needs analysis and collaborate with multi-disciplinary team to develop towards inter-professional education.
  • External - The Senior Medical Social Worker would need to be able to conduct training for social workers and non-social workers, using evidence-based educational strategies and learning needs analysis.
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker would need to be able to participate in curriculum development for workshops or training programs or focus groups for Medical Social Workers, healthcare professionals and community workers.
Leadership
  • The Senior Medical Social Worker would need to co- manage a team (clinical and administrative) and perform performance management of the department.
  • Represent the department in collaborative projects with external agencies.
  • Participate/ Lead in departmental/ inter-departmental projects (e.g. Quality Improvement programme, Clinic Practice Improvement programme)
  • Implement change management within the organization
  • Any other duties as directed by head of department.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education / Training / Experience
  • Recognized Bachelor Degree/ Graduate Diploma with a Social Work Major
  • Preferably to be registered Social Worker as accredited with the Social Work Accreditation and Advisory Board (SWAAB) or an internationally recognized Social Work Accreditation Board
  • All staff is expected to be a registered social worker within 1 year of entry to the department for new hire
  • New Hire: Relevant qualifications and has five years in direct social work practice
  • Existing Staff: Preferably with three to five years of experience as a Job Grade 12 Medical Social Worker
Attributes
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Ability to speak dialects, or Malay/ Mandarin/Tamil would be preferred
  • Knowledge of community and medical sector and their service delivery
  • Strong knowledge of social service sector and relevant Public Policies
  • Strong communication skills and inter-personal skills and can manage staff across all ages.
  • Ability to lead teams and strong team player
  • Passion in working in the social service sector
