We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced expatriate Senior Medical Officer (SMO) to lead the clinical operations of a remote community medical facility in Papua New Guinea.

This FIFO leadership role involves direct patient care, medical oversight, coordination of referrals and evacuations, and ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality healthcare aligned with global and local health frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Represent Medical Services with the Health Service Manager to the Client, External Stakeholders and Community Members.

Provide Clinical and Strategic leadership to the Medical Services of the Medical Centre, Mine Site Clinic and Camp Site Clinic. Provide direct supervision to the team of Medical Doctors, Intensive Care Paramedic and Heads of Department (Radiology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Disease Control and Lab) to ensure compliance with evidenced base guidelines and standards to include rational prescribing, waste reduction and creation of efficient health service delivery.

Undertake clinical responsibilities in the hospital by being actively involved in patient care to include consultation, secondary review and recommendations for Medical Referrals and Medical Evacuations as required. Coordinate Medical Emergencies, Medical Referrals and Medical Evacuations according to Standard Operating procedures and MERP to include coordination, communication, documentation and reporting.

Provide written reports and returns in accordance with the clients’ needs.

Any other reasonable duties delegated by management.

Essential Criteria

Medical degree and current, unrestricted license to practise.

Minimum ten (10) years of experience to include trauma / emergency, occupational health, family medicine and minimum 5 years leadership or management roles. Leadership experience in a medical setting, including remote or resource-limited environments.

Ability to work under pressure and provide clinical guidance in complex cases.

Current CPR / BLS and ALS / ITLS (or equivalent) certifications and willingness to obtain PNG medical registration.

Desirable Criteria

Previous or current PNG Medical Board Registration (highly regarded).

Experience in any of the following: Obstetrics, tropical medicine, aeromedical evacuations, or anaesthetics.

Healthcare experience in the extractive resource or industrial sectors.
