Job summary

OCBC Bank is seeking an experienced API & Middleware Engineer in Singapore to lead the design and delivery of enterprise-grade APIs and microservices. You will work across on-premises and AWS, ensuring scalable, secure, and well-governed API solutions while guiding a team of engineers.

You will collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, and cross-functional teams to implement robust payment and integration capabilities, leveraging modern cloud-native practices and AI-assisted engineering tools

What you do
  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise‑grade APIs and microservices using Java, Spring Boot, and WSO2 technologies across on‑premises and AWS cloud environments.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of engineers, promoting engineering excellence, best practices, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Solution Architects, and cross‑functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable, secure, and resilient API solutions.
  • Drive the architecture, implementation, and governance of RESTful APIs, microservices, and system integrations in alignment with enterprise standards and platform strategies.
  • Lead the development of payment services supporting end‑to‑end payment processing capabilities, including payment initiation, validation, clearing, settlement, reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Design and implement highly available, fault‑tolerant, and performance‑optimised services that meet business, operational, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to API governance, security, and lifecycle management standards, including OAuth2, JWT, Mutual TLS (mTLS), authentication, authorisation, and API versioning practices.
  • Oversee integration initiatives involving internal and external systems using API, middleware, messaging, and event‑driven technologies such as Kafka and IBM MQ.
  • Champion application reliability through robust monitoring, observability, logging, alerting, performance tuning, capacity planning, and disaster recovery practices.
  • Conduct code reviews, solution reviews, and technical assessments to maintain high standards of code quality, security, maintainability, and performance.
  • Lead root cause analysis, problem resolution, and production support activities.
  • Prepare and maintain technical artifacts, including architecture diagrams, API specifications, design documents, operational runbooks, and support procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance platform scalability, resilience, security, maintainability, and developer productivity through continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Leverage AI‑assisted engineering tools to accelerate API design, software development, testing, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and performance optimisation while maintaining enterprise engineering standards.
  • Work closely with architecture and engineering leadership to drive AI‑enabled automation across API development, quality engineering, monitoring, and operational support functions.
  • Ensure all AI‑generated deliverables comply with enterprise security, governance, regulatory, risk, and coding standards prior to production deployment.
Who you are
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of hands‑on software engineering experience, including the design and delivery of enterprise‑scale applications and integration solutions.
  • Proven experience leading technical teams, mentoring engineers, and driving successful project delivery.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the payments domain, covering payment initiation, processing, clearing, settlement, reconciliation, and payment operations.
  • Strong expertise in API and microservices development using Java, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and related technologies.
  • Hands‑on experience with WSO2 API Manager, WSO2 Enterprise Integrator (EI) / Micro Integrator, and API Gateway implementations.
  • Deep understanding of API lifecycle management, API governance, service design, and API security best practices.
  • Experience developing and integrating RESTful and SOAP services using JSON, XML, OpenAPI/Swagger, and related standards.
  • Strong experience with cloud‑native application development and deployment, preferably on AWS, leveraging containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience designing and implementing event‑driven and messaging‑based architectures using Kafka, IBM MQ, or similar platforms.
  • Solid understanding of payment industry standards and messaging protocols, including ISO 20022, SWIFT, and real‑time payment frameworks.
  • Experience implementing observability, monitoring, logging, performance management, and resiliency frameworks for mission‑critical systems.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and CI/CD toolchains, including Jenkins, Bitbucket, Jira, Confluence, SonarQube, and automated testing frameworks.
Good To Have Experiences
  • Experience working within banking, transaction banking, payments, or financial services organisations.
  • Knowledge of regional and global payment schemes, including SWIFT, FAST, PayNow, GIRO, ACH, RTGS, and instant payment platforms.
  • Experience supporting high‑volume, highly available payment processing platforms with stringent SLAs and regulatory requirements.
  • Exposure to cloud architecture, platform modernisation, and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Relevant certifications in AWS, Java, WSO2, API Management, or Payments‑related domains.
  • Experience driving engineering transformation initiatives, including adoption of AI‑assisted software development and automation practices.
  • Demonstrates strong ownership and accountability for technical outcomes and delivery commitments.
  • Leads by example through hands‑on technical contribution, innovation, and operational excellence.
  • Builds high‑performing engineering teams through mentoring, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
  • Influences architectural decisions and engineering standards across teams and initiatives.
  • Effectively manages competing priorities while ensuring solution quality, resilience, and security.
