Job summary

Shopee is seeking a backend engineer in Singapore to design high-performance gateway services and AI agent infrastructure. You will build foundational capabilities for agents, create unified data access layers, and advance the tech stack toward a unified backend architecture.

You will work on scalable backend systems, optimize token costs and latency, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive efficiency and reliability across Shopee's backend services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS or related field.
• At least 2 years of backend experience.
• Strong coding passion and problem-solving mindset.
• Good understanding of AI/LLM-based agents and practical use cases.
• In-depth knowledge of data structures, algorithms, operating systems and networks.

The team builds common services, frameworks, libraries and practices that promote the unification of backend architecture, improve engineering efficiency and ensure that the development for all shopee backend services are smooth, stable and aligned.

The team builds common services, frameworks, libraries and practices that promote the unification of backend architecture, improve engineering efficiency and ensure that the development for all shopee backend services are smooth, stable and aligned.

The team is also extending this scope to AI agents, which are becoming a common engineering workload. We build the foundational capabilities agents run on — execution environments, tool access, memory and context services, and the harness around them — so that engineering teams can build and operate agents on a common and reliable foundation.

Job Description

• Design and build Gateway Services with high performance and reliability


• Build foundational capabilities for AI agents — execution environments, tool infrastructure, memory and context services — for engineering teams to build their agents on


• Build technical products including unified data access layer, service frameworks, common libraries and practices for backend teams to accelerate the tech stack evolution towards a unified backend architecture


• Improve the efficiency, safety and reliability of agent execution: drive down token cost and latency, ensure isolation and controlled access to internal resources


• Create high-quality software development kits, explore innovative technologies and practices to improve engineering efficiency and development experience


• Collaborate with other Tech Teams to implement company-level solutions for analyzing and improving efficiency, scalability, and stability of various system resources and managing services sustainably

Requirements

• Bachelor's or higher degree in Computer Science or related fields


• At least 2 years of relevant experience


• Passionate about coding and programming, innovation, and solving challenging problems


• Strong interest in the frontier of agent technology, with a habit of following how the field evolves and applying new developments in daily work


• Good understanding of AI and LLM-based agents, and hands‑on use of AI coding agents in daily work — with a concrete view of where they work well and where they break down


• In‑depth understanding of computer science fundamentals (data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networks, databases, etc)


• Strong and hands‑on experience with at least one of the programming languages: Go, Python, C++, Java


• Strong logical thinking abilities

Skills below are optional but preferable

• Hands‑on experience building LLM agents or agentic applications: tool calling, multi‑step orchestration, context engineering


• Familiar with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or agent frameworks


• Experience with RAG and retrieval systems: embeddings, vector search, retrieval quality evaluation


• Familiar with Linux development environments and multi‑threaded programming


• Familiar with common network protocols (TCP, UDP, HTTP) and network programming


• Experience in server/web security


• Experience in design and development of large‑scale distributed systems


• Hands‑on experiences in Web Service frameworks and performance tuning of Web Server
