A government ministry in Singapore is seeking committed officers to support the low-carbon transition. You will engage in policy formulation, stakeholder collaboration, and strategies for carbon capture initiatives. Successful candidates will possess strong communication skills and a desire to contribute to environmental change. This role offers opportunities for impactful work in climate policy and innovation.
Singapore’s transition to a low-carbon economy is one of the fundamental transitions of our time. MTI, as chair of Carbon and Energy Transition Working Group (CETWG) and Economic Transition Working Group (ETWG), as well as the Ministry responsible for energy policy will need to address the trilemma of the carbon, energy and economic transitions. We will need to create new policies to navigate the increasingly stark trade-offs between energy security, net‑zero and sustainable economic growth.
MTI is responsible for 3 out of 3 major carbon mitigation measures endorsed by IMCCC – Renewable Energy imports, Carbon Credit procurement, Carbon Capture and Storage (“CCS”). These measures are key to meeting our near‑term 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and are presently moving into critical implementation phase.
The successful implementation of CCS will require complex public‑private partnership, significant infrastructure investments, G2G agreements, and new legislation and regulations. This will have to be done under compressed timelines, and require strong partnerships with stakeholders across Ministries, agencies and private sector players.
MTI’s Energy and Carbon (E&C) Cluster leads initiatives to reduce emissions and drive the transition to a low‑carbon economy. Officers working on the E&C front are tasked to develop carbon markets, plan energy infrastructure, strategise low‑carbon energy sources, and manage mission trajectories and carbon budgets. You will collaborate with various stakeholders to support sustainable economic transformation and green growth through international trade and industry partnerships.
The CCS team sits within the E&C Cluster where we play a critical role in charting the path forward for Singapore’s low‑carbon transition. You will be part of a dynamic team responsible for formulating Singapore’s carbon mitigation strategies and policies, with a focus on carbon capture and storage. You will need to be able to examine issues from multiple perspectives, assess trade‑offs and manage the evolving needs of multiple stakeholders in Government, private sector and other countries.
Your responsibilities include one or more of the following workstreams:
We are looking for driven, capable and committed officers who possess a strong desire to contribute to Singapore’s carbon transition, thrive in a fast‑paced and dynamic environment, are adept at working with multiple stakeholders and across organisational boundaries, and are equipped with the following qualities and competencies:
