The School Laboratory Technician supports the smooth operation, safety, and maintenance of the school’s science laboratories. The role involves preparing, testing, and setting up laboratory materials and apparatus for science lessons and practical assessments, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and supporting teachers in conducting effective and engaging practical lessons.

Key Responsibilities
1. Laboratory Preparation and Support
  • Prepare, label, and arrange materials, reagents, and equipment for science lessons and experiments.
  • Set up laboratory apparatus and ensure all materials are ready before each lesson.
  • Provide technical assistance during lessons or practical assessments when required.
  • Support the conduct of science practical examinations (e.g., N-Level, O-Level, A-Level, or internal assessments).
2. Safety and Maintenance
  • Ensure laboratories comply with safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Maintain chemical inventories, proper labelling, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Check and maintain equipment in good working condition; arrange for repairs or servicing when necessary.
  • Conduct regular inspections of laboratory facilities to identify and rectify potential hazards.
  • Manage chemical and biological waste disposal in accordance with environmental and school policies.
3. Inventory and Record Management
  • Maintain accurate records of chemical and equipment usage.
  • Conduct stocktaking and reorder consumables or equipment as required.
  • Ensure proper storage of materials and secure handling of hazardous substances.
4. Administrative and Logistical Support
  • Assist Science Teachers or Heads of Department (HOD Science) in preparing practical schedules and resource lists.
  • Provide logistical support for science-related events such as Science Fairs, Open Houses, or CCA showcases.
  • Manage the laboratory booking system to ensure fair and efficient usage across departments.
5. Professional Development and Collaboration
  • Keep abreast of laboratory safety standards, new equipment, and experimental techniques.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to improve practical learning experiences.
  • Participate in relevant professional learning and safety courses.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
  • Minimum NITEC / Higher NITEC / Diploma in Applied Science, Chemical Process Technology, Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology, or related fields.
  • Relevant experience working in a school or educational laboratory environment is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
  • Good knowledge of laboratory practices, safety procedures, and risk management.
  • Familiarity with chemical handling, storage, and waste disposal protocols.
  • Competence in preparing and setting up experiments in Physics, Chemistry, and/or Biology.
  • Basic IT proficiency (Microsoft Office, digital recordkeeping).
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Reporting Structure

Reports to:

  • Head of Science Department (HOD Science) or Laboratory Supervisor

  • Regular working hours aligned with the school schedule
  • Occasional overtime during exam periods or laboratory audits
