General Description / Primary Purpose
Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Plant Controller is responsible for plant periodic financial reporting projects, as well as accounting control policies and procedures for plant operations.
Responsibilities
- Lead the consolidation and delivery of accurate and timely periodic financial reporting projects such as the monthly financial close process for plant, operating metrics, forecast/budget cycles, and prepare period operations report summarizing plant performance, as well as ad‑hoc analyses.
- Develop and maintain a standard cost accounting system, including operations and variance analyses; leverage comprehensive financial analyses and use results to provide strategic input to upper management in support of Operational Excellence initiatives.
- Monitor process effectiveness and efficiency against goals and objectives, taking corrective action as necessary; identify, implement, and support complex process improvements.
- Develop internal accounting control policies and procedures for plant operations; monitor compliance in these areas.
\- Develop systems to forecast and manage direct and indirect manufacturing expenses.
- Identify the interdependencies within Manufacturing and in the overall business and discuss the potential impact of an issue.
- Leverage expertise of functional groups, other plant locations and best practices to recommend systems and process improvements.
- Manage the hourly payroll process, including automated timekeeping and check disbursement.
- Directly supervise employees assigned to accounting functions; carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
- Maintain smoothly functioning department/work area in compliance with standards set by the company’s Human Resources Department.
- Establish scope of authority and responsibility for direct reports.
- Periodically meet with direct reports to establish individual and team performance goals, review, coach and monitor performance against goals, discuss significant operations issues and review staff training and development requirements; establish goals and measures to track the success of the department.
- Promote teamwork among accounting staff to ensure work is performed in a collaborative manner and standards for excellent customer service are achieved.
- Maintain effective communication with all management staff to ensure coordination and exchange of information for accomplishing company goals. Gather and disseminate information to all areas/departments regarding policy and procedures changes, and other important issues involving assigned areas.
- Analyze the workflow of the Accounting department and continuously make recommendations to the Director of Finance, Vice President Finance, and CFO for changes to improve efficiency and reduce cost.
- Coordinate the orientation and training of new Accounting staff.
- Assist in development of annual operating budget.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Experience
- Minimum 5–6 years of financial reporting and cost accounting experience.
- Recent experience at a plant or operating unit of a consumer products company with monthly reporting responsibilities to a division or corporate office.
- Familiarity with mainframe systems; i.e., J.D. Edwards or an equivalent. JDE, AS400 experience preferred.
- Working computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated leadership/management skills; skilled at coaching and developing employees.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Bilingual English/Spanish language skills helpful.
- Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills.
Education and Certification
- B.A. in Accounting or Finance. CPA or MBA desirable.
Employee Management
- Supervises a group of nonexempt and potential 1 or 2 exempt employees performing moderately complex or diversified work.
Physical Requirements
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift (including overhead) and/or up to 15 lbs.
Work Hour Requirement
- Ability to weekends, rotating shifts preferred/required.
Pay Rate
- $130,000 - $140,000 Annually
