Job summary

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a four-year PhD fellowship in urban climate and air pollution observation and modelling, beginning August 2027. The PhD student will join Professor Mengze Li's research group and study climate and atmospheric environments in high-rise, high-density tropical cities, using Singapore as a live urban laboratory.

The project combines urban environmental observations, geospatial data, and modelling to improve understanding of urban climate

Qualifications

English-language proficiency required; IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL equivalent.
Substantial research experience with multiple projects; strong scientific writing.
Ability to conduct independent research and develop an original PhD proposal.
Interest in combining observational data with quantitative modelling and data analysis.
Willingness to participate in field measurements in Singapore.
Experience with environmental or atmospheric instrumentation, sensor networks, micrometeorology, air-quality monitoring, GIS/spatial analysis, numerical modelling, ML/AI, or large environmental datasets.
Publications in peer-reviewed journals preferred; first-author papers valued.

Responsibilities

Conduct research on urban climate and air pollution in high-rise tropical cities.
Combine urban observations with multi-source geospatial data and modelling.
Develop or apply process- or physics-based numerical models, statistical methods, or ML/AI approaches.
Develop and propose an original PhD research plan with supervisor guidance.
Engage in field measurements using environmental sensors in Singapore.
