Overview

Position: Outdoor Play and Learning Instructional Assistant

An Outdoor Play and Learning Instructional Assistant is responsible for creating and leading engaging outdoor activities, ensuring the safety of children during play, and facilitating their learning and development. This role involves supervising children, assisting teachers with lesson planning, and maintaining outdoor learning spaces and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Activity facilitation: Develop and lead a variety of outdoor educational and play-based activities that encourage exploration, social interaction, and physical development.
  • Child supervision and safety: Monitor children\'s activities to ensure their safety, implement and enforce safety protocols, and provide first aid when necessary.
  • Instruction and support: Assist teachers in planning and adapting outdoor learning sessions to meet individual student needs. Reinforce lessons by working with students individually or in small groups.
  • Learning environment: Help create and maintain a positive and inclusive outdoor learning environment. Assist in preparing materials and managing inventory for outdoor activities.
  • Communication and record-keeping: Communicate with teachers, parents, and administrators regarding student progress, incidents, or concerns. Maintain records of activities, attendance, and student progress.
  • Collaboration: Support other staff in developing and implementing outdoor learning across the curriculum.
  • Program evaluation: Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and activities and contribute to the planning of future outdoor learning experiences.
Required skills and qualifications
  • Experience: Experience working with children in a supervisory or educational capacity is often required.
  • Child development knowledge: Strong understanding of child development principles and age-appropriate activities.
  • Safety expertise: Knowledge of safety practices, including first aid and CPR certification (often preferred).
  • Interpersonal skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Physical ability: Ability to be outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks related to supervising and setting up activities.
