Job description

The Manager, Telecommunications & Network organises Engineers and Technical Specialists to perform day-to-day activities in wired network management. He/She provides supervision and on-the-job training to Engineers and Technical Specialists. He/She resolves more complex and non-routine issues in network. He/She manages vendor to ensure products and services are delivered according to plan or contract. He/She supervises complex or major projects in engineering, integration, testing & maintenance of the various transmission paths. He/She supervises projects for outside plant installation of transmission equipment, reception equipment, cable & pipeline laying. He/She ensures end-to-end service delivery and quality. He/She assists the Director with vendor & contract negotiations. He/She assists the Director in budgeting and cost management functions.

Tasks
  • Assess whether the existing infrastructure meets the client requirements or if additional equipment/cards need to be added.
  • Calculate the cable loss per distance.
  • Calculate the microwave link budget.
  • Calculate the power required by each equipment.
  • Connect the relevant network equipment to interface with the various transmission network links.
  • Create the detailed network topology diagram.
  • Determine the equipment required to interface the new network with the other networks.
  • Determine the frequency of operation for the microwave and any possible signal loss.
  • Determine the microwave communication path.
  • Determine the optimal antenna height.
  • Determine the power supply, the cards and the ports which will be required for the interface.
  • Determine the various network dimensions based on the client requirements and criticality of the network.
  • Estimate the intended traffic to be served by the transmission network.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of various network topologies based on client requirements, redundancy requirements and the ease of maintenance and upgrades.
  • Identify the cables to be used depending on distance, reliability and costs.
  • Identify the total costs for the equipment, infrastructure and power required for the selected network topology.
  • Test the integrated network links for network redundancy, resilience and load testing.
  • Test the transmission network links against the network specifications.
  • Use planning tools to simulate various network capacity requirement scenarios.
