Job Title: Network L3 Engineer (Senior Network Engineer - WAN Specialist)
Location: [City, State/Province]
Company: [Company Name]
Job Type: Full-Time
Job Overview
We are searching for an accomplished Network L3 Engineer with deep expertise in designing, implementing, and optimizing complex Wide Area Network (WAN) solutions. This senior role involves taking ownership of global connectivity strategies, managing vendor relationships, architecting resilient WAN infrastructures, and acting as the final escalation point for all related network challenges. The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert in core routing protocols, hybrid connectivity models (MPLS, SD‑WAN, IPsec VPN), and performance optimization across diverse geographical locations.
Key Responsibilities
- WAN Architecture & Design: Lead the strategy, design, and implementation of highly available and scalable WAN infrastructures across global offices and data centers.
- SD‑WAN Implementation: Architect, deploy, and manage Software‑Defined Wide Area Network (SD‑WAN) solutions (e.g., Cisco Viptela/Catalyst SD‑WAN, Fortinet FortiWAN, or Versa), including policy definition, segmentation, and optimization.
- Advanced Routing Protocols: Maintain expert‑level knowledge and practical experience with core routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, and MPLS traffic engineering.
- Carrier Management: Interface directly with network service providers (carriers) to provision circuits, manage circuit testing (BERT/loopbacks), troubleshoot link performance issues, and ensure adherence to SLAs.
- Complex Troubleshooting: Serve as the L3 escalation point for all critical WAN incidents, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools (e.g., Wireshark, NetFlow analyzers) to perform deep packet analysis and root cause analysis (RCA).
- Network Optimization: Monitor WAN performance metrics (latency, jitter, packet loss), optimize Quality of Service (QoS) policies, and implement traffic shaping techniques to prioritize critical business applications.
- Hybrid Connectivity & Security: Implement secure connectivity solutions, including Site‑to‑Site VPNs (IPsec/GRE tunnels) and integration with cloud security frameworks (SASE/Zscaler).
- Documentation & Standards: Develop and maintain high‑level design (HLD) and low‑level design (LLD) documentation, network diagrams, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all WAN services.
- Mentorship: Guide and mentor L1/L2 engineers on best practices for WAN management and troubleshooting.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related engineering discipline.
- Experience: 5‑8+ years of experience in senior network engineering roles, with significant project experience focused specifically on large‑scale WAN environments.
- Proficiency with BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, and SD‑WAN solution deployment.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with tools such as Wireshark and network flow analyzers.
- Experience managing carrier relationships and ensuring SLA compliance.
- Excellent documentation skills for HLD/LLD and SOP creation.
- Ability to mentor and lead junior engineering staff.
