Job description

The Histotechnologist embeds, cuts, mounts, stains, and studies specimens of human tissue to provide data on the functioning of tissues and organs, causes, and/or progress of disease. Performs related duties following established standards and practices.

Under limited supervision, and in accordance with Company policies, procedures, and guidelines, this

position:

  1. Processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by using appropriate methods for fixing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting. Reviews methods and implements changes if required.
  2. Prepares reagents and stains to meet departmental quality standards.
  3. Consults with Pathologists regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings. Maintains open communication with supervisors, pathologists, and co-workers.
  4. Develops a high level of proficiency. Updates knowledge through literature and available resources. Participates in examinations to test proficiency.
  5. Provides and records instrument Preventative Maintenance. Troubleshoots instrumentation monitors quality control of staining/processing methods, use alternate methods when appropriate, and refers problems to supervisor or pathologist as needed.
  6. Practices strict adherence to standard operating procedures, laboratory safety, and infection control policies.
  7. Performs immunohistochemical testing and related procedures including Immunofluorescence and Immunoperoxidase procedures. Provides proper labeling and storage of all reagents.
  8. Ensures accurate patient information, and accession numbers.
  9. Cleans laboratory glass and plastic ware as needed, adhering to defined procedures of cleaning.
  10. Resolves discrepancies or omissions in patient/clinical information.
  11. Performs other assigned duties as instructed or required
