About the role

We are looking for a Manager Marine Safety and Vetting to join our Marine Operations team. Rio Tinto Marine exists to provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective shipping services to the Rio Tinto Group. It has a team comprised of professionals with expertise across safety, vetting, assurance, environment and climate change, operations and chartering. It serves as the primary centre of marine supply chain expertise within the Rio Tinto Group, possessing in-depth knowledge of marine transportation, global freight markets, and international regulatory frameworks. Rio Tinto Marine is responsible for managing, as a principal, all Rio Tinto Ocean freight and the Group's freight exposure globally.

Reporting to the General Manager Marine Operations and Performance, the role has accountability for:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Sales & Marketing, you will:

  • Maintaining critical lines of defence for Health, Safety, Environmental, Welfare and Human Rights risks on board Rio Tinto fleet of owned vessels and chartered vessels.
  • Vetting of vessels performing over 2,800 voyages annually calling Rio Tinto and third‑party ports globally to maintain high quality standard of vessels in the portfolio.
  • Oversee vessel and shipowner reviews, audits, and inspections with internal assurance teams and third‑party surveyors, and manage, track, and resolve improvement actions resulting from these activities.
  • Manage incidents on vessels carrying Rio Tinto products, including coordination of incident response plans, investigations, reporting and learnings.
  • Lead Rio Tinto's initiatives to improve safety and welfare in bulk shipping by collaborating with industry peers, ship owners, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Implement advanced digital tools to identify risks and prevent incidents using Rio Tinto Marine's comprehensive data sets.
  • Develop and implement Rio Tinto‑specific training programs to improve Health, Safety, Environmental, Welfare and Human Rights aspects onboard the fleets and within the team.
What you will need for the role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Relevant Degree qualification with operations experience working for organisations in the Marine sector.
  • Experience leading diverse teams, strong leadership, influencing and coaching skills.
  • Understanding of marine risk management, marine risk categorisation and overall management techniques for handling marine risks.
  • Ability to drive programs of change and deliver challenging targets and outcomes.
  • Excellent technical writing, and skills utilizing digital and data analytics tools.
  • Ability to learn and share learnings within the organisation and with third parties.
  • Maritime industry networks and contacts, ability to develop positive engagements and collaborate with vessel owners, technical management companies, vetting and assurance and training providers, non‑governmental organisations and regulators.
It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Occupational Safety and Health degree.
  • Master Class Certificate of Competency and/or Chief Engineer Certification.
  • Sailed on bulk ore carriers and/or tankers.
  • Risk auditing and incident investigation experience.
