NHG Health in Singapore is seeking an experienced locum Medical Laboratory Technologist to support the Microbiology section. You will prepare and inoculate culture media from blood, urine, and other fluids, perform Gram stains, and read culture plates to document growth and report findings.

You will differentiate likely pathogens from contaminants, apply reporting criteria, and run preliminary identification tests per SOPs.

Qualifications

• Experience in a Microbiology lab setting and adherence to SOPs.
• Ability to perform Gram stains, culture handling, and preliminary identifications.
• Availability for shift work, including weekends and public holidays.

• Prepare and inoculate culture media from clinical specimens.
• Perform and interpret Gram stains and correlate with culture results.
• Monitor culture plates and document growth characteristics at defined intervals.
• Differentiate pathogens from contaminants and apply reporting criteria.
• Conduct preliminary identification tests as per SOPs (e.g., rapid tests).
• Recognize time-sensitive results and escalate per protocol.
• Apply antimicrobial susceptibility testing triggers and refer for further testing when needed.

This locum roles supports the Microbiology section to:

• prepares and inoculates culture media from blood, urine, and fluid specimens.
• Performs and interprets Gram stains and correlates stain results with culture findings.
• Reads culture plates at defined incubation intervals and documents growth characteristics.
• Differentiates likely pathogens from contaminants and mixed flora; applies laboratory criteria for reporting.
• Performs preliminary identification tests (e.g., catalase, coagulase, oxidase, rapid biochemical tests) as per laboratory SOPs.
• Recognises and takes appropriate action for critical or time-sensitive results (e.g., positive blood culture with Gram‑positive cocci in clusters) including prompt notification per escalation protocol.
• Applies antimicrobial susceptibility testing triggers correctly and refers isolates for further testing where required.

Requirements

We are looking for experienced locum MLTs who are able to committ to shift work duties covering day, night shifts across a roster that includes weekends and public holidays.
