JOB DESCRIPTION

The Lab Technician is expected to support and assist the science department in the management of resources and in the preparation of science experiments in the science laboratories. The Lab Technician will be expected to specifically develop and maintain effective working relationships with the Secondary science teachers, learners and suppliers and external agencies.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To include, but not be limited to:

  • Keeping an up to date inventory of equipment and resources and regularly updating it
  • Organising ordering of equipment and maintaining adequate stocks of basic items
  • Keeping records of recipes, successful experiments, etc. for future use cross-indexed to each grade level.
  • Preparing apparatus and reagents and worksheets in advance of classes, trialing and checking working of reactions etc before lessons
  • Ensuring laboratories are safe, hygienic and secure
  • Checking gas and fire equipment regularly and keeping written record
  • Preparing and trying out experiments for practical examinations. Being available to assist during such exams
  • Setting up and maintaining a spillages kit in each lab and a basic first aid kit in prep lab
  • Setting out and clearing up equipment promptly and safely before start and upon completion of lessons
  • Cleaning equipment thoroughly, including washing glassware and checking its safe operation, organising maintenance and repair of equipment making sure spares are available (batteries, bulbs etc)
  • Dating chemicals upon arrival and ensuring proper storage. Checking stock regularly both in labs and prep room and restocking and organising reorder as necessary
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Higher degree or recognised professional qualification (preferred)
  • Evidence of continued relevant professional development
  • Experience in working in a laboratory setting (at least 2 years)
  • Experience in an international school environment (preferred)
  • Possess reasonable IT skills and knowledge, for example Microsoft (MS) Applications such as Excel and Word
  • Inclusive, resilient, flexible and adaptable
  • High standards and expectations
  • Communicate effectively in Standard English both orally and in writing
