Summary of the Role

The Junior School Specialist Teaching Assistant (Art & Design) provides teaching, pastoral and administrative support for the Art & Design Department, under the guidance of the Head of Department and classroom teachers. The role requires initiative, flexibility and dedication, with a particular emphasis on the maintenance and management of spaces, resources and displays. When administrative duties are completed, the post-holder is expected to actively support teaching and learning in lessons.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Encourage a culture of respect, inclusion, diversity and equity, ensuring that all members of the School community feel valued, supported and represented.
  • Provide support for individual students, both in lessons and in small groups, to enable full participation and progress in Art & Design activities.
  • Assist with practical / higher‑risk activities, ensuring safe and effective use of tools, equipment and materials.
  • Prepare materials and equipment in advance of practical lessons and tidy away afterwards.
  • Assist with demonstrations and examples as directed by teachers.
  • Provide feedback to teachers on individual students’ learning and pastoral needs.
  • Help maintain an inclusive, positive and stimulating classroom environment.
Pastoral Care
  • Demonstrate a caring, supportive attitude towards every student.
  • Support classroom teachers and the Junior School Leadership Team in matters relating to behaviour and well‑being.
  • Supervise students in line with the School’s Code of Conduct and pastoral policies.
  • Record observations and provide feedback to teachers as appropriate.
Administrative and Resource Management
  • Ensure all departmental materials, tools and equipment are well‑maintained, safe and stored securely.
  • Maintain and manage specialist technologies and resources.
  • Oversee ordering and stock management of consumables and specialist resources.
  • Prepare, mount and present displays of students’ work in classrooms and wider School spaces.
  • Photograph and document student work for departmental use and student portfolios.
  • Assist with the organisation of events, exhibitions, visiting practitioners and trips.
Organisation and Communication
  • Contribute to daily routines and assist with forward planning of Art & Design events and initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, students and parents (where necessary), referring queries to teachers or the Head of Department as appropriate.
  • Actively participate in departmental and whole‑School meetings where relevant.
Professional Development
  • Attend in‑service training and professional development sessions to maintain knowledge of Art & Design processes, health and safety, and pedagogy.
  • Keep accurate records of professional development in accordance with School requirements.
  • Seek out training and support opportunities to enhance professional practice.
Safeguarding
  • Abide by the School’s safeguarding and child protection policies and keep abreast of any changes.
  • Remain alert to and report any safeguarding concerns in line with School procedures.
  • Keep up to date with changes in safeguarding legislation and best practice.
  • Maintain confidentiality and data protection standards at all times.
Other Duties
  • Understand and comply with all relevant School policies (health & safety, fire, emergency procedures, etc.).
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties within the overall function of the role, commensurate with its responsibilities.
