Job summary

Ley Choon Constructions and Engineering Pte Ltd is offering an internship for undergraduates in Civil/Materials Engineering to join our asphalt technology R&D and QA/QC lab. You will gain hands-on experience in premix formulation and laboratory testing, working with seasoned engineers.

With a 5-day work week at our Singapore office, training is provided and you will learn testing procedures, data analysis, and materials evaluation essential for infrastructure development.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate students currently pursuing Civil Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering disciplines with an interest in asphalt technology, materials testing, and infrastructure development.

Responsibilities

• Assist in R&D and asphalt premix formulation, including bitumen modification and mix design optimisation.
• Conduct laboratory testing on asphalt materials (aggregates, bitumen, premix) and perform related analyses.
• Prepare QC test reports and maintain laboratory records per ISO quality practices.
• Gain hands-on experience with QC procedures, testing equipment, and data interpretation.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

We are one of the largest one-stop Underground Utilities Infrastructure companies based in Singapore. We provide Underground Utilities Infrastructure construction and maintenance, sewer pipeline rehabilitation, road and airfield construction and maintenance as well as asphalt pre-mix production and construction waste recycling.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Research & Development (R&D) and Asphalt Premix Formulation

• Assist the R&D team in developing and improving asphalt premix formulations through bitumen modification, additive selection, and mix design optimisation.
• Support asphalt mix trials, preparation, and evaluation to meet project requirements and performance expectations.
• Gain exposure to advanced asphalt solutions, including:
  • EME2: High-modulus asphalt concrete designed for heavy-duty base courses.
  • W3B (HiP): Polymer-modified high-performance wearing course for high-stress areas such as bus lanes and heavy traffic zones.
  • Plastic Asphalt: Sustainable asphalt solutions incorporating waste plastic materials into bituminous binders.
• Assist in evaluating binder and aggregate interactions to improve asphalt performance, durability, and quality.
• Support asphalt development activities in accordance with quality standards and industry practices.

2. Laboratory Testing and Material Analysis

• Conduct laboratory testing and analysis on asphalt materials, including aggregates, steel slag, bitumen, and asphalt premix samples.
• Perform material tests such as sieve analysis, particle size distribution, and Los Angeles Abrasion testing to assess aggregate properties and durability.
• Support asphalt performance and volumetric testing according to project specifications and authority requirements.
• Assist in evaluating asphalt properties through laboratory trials and simulated field condition testing.
• Gain hands-on experience in operating asphalt testing equipment, including Marshall Compactor, Multiloader, UTM machines, DSR, wheel tracker, ovens, and microscope equipment.
• Work closely with laboratory technicians and engineers to ensure accurate testing procedures and results.

3. Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) Documentation

• Assist in preparing QC test reports for R&D trials, production samples, and project submissions.
• Maintain laboratory records, test results, and technical documentation.
• Analyse test data and support the identification of any deviations against required specifications.
• Support compliance with project requirements, authority standards, and ISO 9001 quality management practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Undergraduate students currently pursuing Civil Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering disciplines with an interest in asphalt technology, materials testing, and infrastructure development.
• Training will be provided.
