As an Instrument Technician Associate, you are responsible to provide sterile and serviceable surgical instruments by demonstrating competence in all aspects of sterile processing: decontamination, inspection, preparation, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of the sterile items to operating theatres and SOCs levels.
Responsibilities
Instrument Decontamination
- Practise Standard Precautions and wear PPE when handling soiled instruments
- Receive contaminated instruments, sort and disassemble complex specialty instrumentation and decontaminates them using appropriate methods, cleaning agents and equipment operation
- Check and ensure mechanical washer-disinfector and ultrasonic equipment are clean and working within the established parameters.
Inspection and Preventive Maintenance
- Be familiar with various categories of instruments and precautions and inspects instruments for dirt, stains and malfunctions
- Troubleshoot and carry out minor repair as appropriate
- Lubricate handpieces as according to IFU
- Monitors and maintain records of servicing and repairs
Packaging
- Sort, assemble and pack complex instrumentation according to established techniques.
- Upkeep packing stations, top up supplies and check sealing equipment.
Sterilization & Sterile Storage
- Prioritize and load packages for sterilization according to standard of practice
- Documents all chemical & biological indicators, mechanical parameters per sterilizer and load protocols
- Verify all sterilization process as per guidelines.
- Store sets on designated storage racks according to FIFO standard
- Clean and check all sterilizing equipment, auto-loaders and storage racks for operational efficiency
Distribution
- Check for integrity and sterility of instrument sets and handle sets with care
- Issue sets accurately and promptly as requested by clinical areas
- Ensure all parameters and tests are approved before placing the instrument sets on the issuing trolley
Quality Controls
- Check and maintain sterile processing devices and equipment
- Verify performance of washer-decontaminator and sterilizers with chemical and biological indicators testDocument processing, sterilization, and quality assurance activities
- Maintain and update records
Communication
- Communicate with team personnel for smooth transition of work between each functional area and work shift
- Communicate with GAOT, LAOT, SOCs and other departments as instructed by Supervisors
- Attend to telephone enquiries from internal staff and external persons immediately and provide advice as appropriate, otherwise direct inquirers to relevant persons
Supervision
- To provide guidance and supervision to Healthcare Assistants
Other Duties
- Perform any other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.
- Assist Senior Staff Nurse/Staff Nurse in inventory and stock check
Requirements
- GCE N Level/ Equivalent
- Certificate in Sterilization Services Training Course by Alice Lee IAN/ Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) Course by ICAS/ Equivalent would be advantageous
- Relevant healthcare experience preferred
- Good command of written English and knowledge of Microsoft Office
