Job Title: Head of PE, Sport, and ECA
Job Grade: Middle management
Reports To: Principal
Direct Subordinates: PE Teachers, Sports Coaches, ECA Providers (internal and external)
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Teaching & Learning (Physical Education)
- Deliver high-quality PE lessons in accordance with the school’s curriculum framework and educational philosophy.
- Lead curriculum planning and development for Physical Education across all grade levels.
- Promote and model effective teaching strategies to inspire student engagement and achievement in PE.
- Implement assessment frameworks to monitor and evaluate student progress and achievement in physical skills, fitness, and teamwork.
- Ensure lessons and activities are inclusive, differentiated, and safe for all students.
- Support the integration of health, fitness, and well‑being education into the wider school curriculum.
2. Leadership & Coordination of Sports Programmes
- Oversee and manage all school sports teams, including selection, coaching schedules, and development pathways.
- Plan and coordinate inter‑house, inter‑campus, and inter‑school tournaments and fixtures.
- Represent the school in regional and national sporting associations and coordinate participation in external leagues.
- Establish and maintain professional partnerships with other schools, sports federations, and local sports organizations.
- Lead the annual sports calendar, ensuring alignment with academic schedules and school events.
- Manage the procurement and maintenance of sports equipment and facilities.
3. Extra‑Curricular Activities (ECA) Management
- Oversee the design, coordination, and implementation of all ECAs, ensuring a broad, balanced, and engaging programme that supports student development.
- Manage relationships with both internal and external ECA providers, ensuring alignment with school values, safety standards, and operational requirements.
- Monitor the quality and effectiveness of all ECAs through regular evaluation, feedback collection, and reporting.
- Coordinate scheduling and timetabling for all ECA activities.
- Ensure adequate supervision, risk management, and safeguarding in all ECA activities.
4. Off‑Site Facilities & Transport Coordination
- Identify, organise, and book suitable local sports facilities to support the delivery of PE lessons, sports teams, and ECA activities.
- Liaise with community sports centres, clubs, and local authorities to secure appropriate venues for training, matches, and tournaments.
- Coordinate logistics and scheduling for off‑site lessons and events, ensuring minimal disruption to academic schedules.
- Arrange and oversee bus transport for students and staff to and from off‑site venues, ensuring safety, punctuality, and proper supervision.
- Maintain up‑to‑date records of facility usage, bookings, and transportation arrangements.
- Manage budgets and invoices related to external facility hire and transportation services.
5. Safeguarding and Student Welfare
- Ensure the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection are upheld during all on‑site and off‑site sports and ECA activities.
- Conduct regular risk assessments for all venues, activities, and transportation arrangements.
- Ensure all PE staff, coaches, and external providers are aware of and comply with the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, incidents, and follow‑up actions related to health and safety or welfare concerns.
- Promote a culture of vigilance, inclusion, and respect among staff and students.
- Liaise with the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) regarding any concerns about student safety or well‑being.
6. Leadership & Team Development
- Provide professional leadership and mentorship to PE staff, coaches, and activity leaders.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, lesson observations, and staff development sessions.
- Promote a collaborative, positive, and professional culture within the PE and ECA teams.
- Work closely with the Principal and SLT to align PE and ECA goals with the overall school strategy.
7. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
- Maintain effective communication with students, staff, parents, and external partners regarding PE, sports, and ECA programmes.
- Promote school sports and ECAs through newsletters, social media, and school events.
- Liaise with marketing and communications teams to showcase student achievements and school events.
- Ensure that parents and guardians are regularly informed about schedules, team selections, and student progress.
8. Organisational & Administrative Management
- Develop and manage annual budgets for PE, sport, and ECA programmes.
- Maintain accurate records for attendance, participation, equipment inventories, and risk assessments.
- Ensure that all PE and sports activities comply with health, safety, and safeguarding standards.
- Organise and oversee major school events such as Sports Day, Fitness Week, and inter‑house competitions.
- Contribute to school leadership meetings and assist in the development of whole‑school improvement plans.
9. Professional Conduct & Self‑Management

Job Specification
Years of Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in teaching PE, coaching or leading school sports/activities programmes.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a related discipline.
- A teaching qualification (B.Ed, PGCE, or equivalent) is highly preferred.
Professional Competencies
- Strong leadership and organisational skills.
- Proven experience in sports management and curriculum design.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with stakeholders.
- Competence in ICT, including Microsoft Office and scheduling software.
- Strong logistical and administrative skills related to off‑site coordination.
Language Abilities
- Fluency in spoken and written English. Ability to speak other languages desirable.
Other Requirements
- Demonstrated record of success in organising and coaching school sports teams.
- Experience managing ECAs and coordinating with external providers.
- Current first aid and safeguarding certification preferred.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends for school events.
