Job description

Our client specializes in fast, reliable and accurate testing of metal and currently, they are seeking a results-driven and people-oriented Workshop Manager as the Head of Department, Workshop to lead the machining workshop in specimen preparation for laboratory testing. The incumbent will manage a team of machinists to ensure all workshop operations are carried out safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with quality standards.

Please note that there is no work visa / pass sponsorship for this position.

SUMMARY OF JOB CONTENTS

This role combines technical expertise with strong leadership and people management skills. The Workshop Manager is expected to drive operational performance through effective planning, process improvement, and resource optimization, while fostering a motivated, skilled, and safety-conscious workforce that supports the company’s testing operations and service excellence goals.

JOB DIMENSION (SCOPE)
  • Oversee resource planning, workload distribution, and manpower deployment to meet production schedules and quality targets.
  • Ensure all machining and specimen preparation activities are performed in accordance with SOPs, safety, and SAC-SINGLAS quality standards.
  • Lead, coach, develop a team of machinists to achieve high performance and accountability.
  • Maintain traceability and proper documentation of all samples, materials, and processes.
  • Oversee maintenance, calibration, and availability of workshop equipment, tooling, and consumables.
  • Develop and implement Workshop SOPs, training frameworks, and improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor departmental expenditure, inventory, and assist in annual budget planning and cost control.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and teamwork through effective communication and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Identify process inefficiencies and lead continuous improvement projects to enhance operational excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Diploma or Degree in Precision, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering or any related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory or managerial experience in machining or workshop operations.
  • Strong knowledge of machining processes (milling, turning, wire EDM) and workshop safety.
  • Proficient in interpreting mechanical drawings and developing machining process plans.
  • Familiarity with metal processing techniques such as welding, cutting, and heat treatment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office
