Job summary

Standard Chartered Bank is seeking an Executive Director, Data Design to establish and govern the bank's logical data design standards, authoritative data sources, and dataset onboarding across Data Platforms & Products. You will serve as the design authority for data domains, structures and integration patterns, ensuring alignment with target architecture and governance standards across platforms.

Job Summary

The Executive Director, Data Design is responsible for establishing and governing the Bank's logical data design standards, authoritative data source framework, and dataset onboarding model across the Data Platforms & Products function. The role serves as the design authority for data domains, data structures, integration patterns and platform onboarding, ensuring that all new data initiatives, datasets and AI/ML consumption use cases align to the Bank's target data architecture, data supply chain principles, and data management standards. The role operates horizontally across all platform and product teams and acts as the central control point for data design decisions without direct ownership of any specific platform, governance capability, or data quality domain.


Key Responsibilities

Data Domain Architecture & Golden Source Management


  • Maintain the enterprise inventory of data domains and authoritative (golden) data sources.

  • Define and manage canonical logical data models across business domains.

  • Lead resolution of conflicting source system ownership and golden source disputes.

  • Ensure all platform datasets are aligned to approved domain structures and source hierarchies.

  • Support Data Product teams in identifying authoritative data assets for consumption.


Data Design Authority


  • Act as the formal design authority for data models, data structures and integration patterns entering the Data Platform estate.

  • Define and maintain data design principles, modelling standards and architecture guardrails.

  • Review and approve new data designs, platform integrations and structural changes.

  • Ensure consistency of data architecture across domains, platforms and delivery teams.

  • Drive simplification, standardisation and reuse of common data models.


SDLC Data Design Governance


  • Embed mandatory data design review checkpoints into software delivery and data delivery lifecycles.

  • Establish approval mechanisms for new datasets, schemas and integration designs.

  • Prevent non-compliant data solutions progressing into build and production environments.

  • Partner with Architecture and Engineering teams to automate design compliance controls where possible.

  • Monitor adherence to approved standards and escalate exceptions.


AI/ML Data Consumption Architecture


  • Define standardised patterns for AI, Machine Learning and Advanced Analytics access to enterprise data assets.

  • Ensure AI/ML data consumption aligns with approved architecture principles and platform standards.

  • Partner with Data, Analytics and Engineering teams to establish reusable AI-ready data access models.

  • Review emerging AI use cases and determine appropriate data sourcing and consumption approaches.

  • Support responsible and compliant adoption of AI capabilities across the Bank.

  • Demonstrate exemplary conduct and uphold the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct.

  • Take responsibility for maintaining high ethical standards and ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, guidelines, and the Group Code of Conduct at Standard Chartered Bank.

  • Lead the CDO team to deliver on the Bank’s Conduct Principles: Fair Outcomes for Clients, Effective Financial Markets, Financial Crime Compliance, and the Right Environment.

  • Identify, escalate, mitigate, and resolve risk, conduct, and compliance issues promptly and collaboratively.

Our Ideal Candidate


  • Relevant Academic or Professional Education/Qualifications

  • 15+ years experience in enterprise data management, data architecture or large-scale data transformation.

  • Experience embedding governance controls into SDLC and delivery processes.

  • Strong executive stakeholder management and influencing capability.


Role Specific Technical Competencies


  • Deep expertise in logical and conceptual data modelling.

  • Strong understanding of data platforms, data products and data supply chain concepts.

  • Experience operating Design Authority or Architecture Review Board functions.

  • Knowledge of metadata, lineage, data quality and data governance disciplines.

  • Understanding of AI/ML data architecture and consumption patterns.
