Responsibilities

Job description

The Antenatal Diagnostic Centre at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital is looking to hire a Genetic Counsellor to work alongside Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists in providing a high standard of care to patients whose pregnancies are at increased risk for genetic conditions. The Genetic Counsellor will also support patients with interpreting abnormal prenatal screening and diagnostic test results and provide genetic counseling services to patients referred from Obstetricians in other departments.

Job Scope:
  • Applies knowledge of genetics and genetic conditions to effectively convey genetic, medical and technical information to patients
  • Reviews family histories of patients to address concerns for genetic conditions and discuss options for further evaluation including, screening, diagnostic testing, and referrals to other specialists
  • Performs pre-test and post-test counselling for various prenatal screening and diagnostic tests and facilitate patients’ decision-making in a non-directive manner
  • Identifies family dynamics and emotional responses from patients and their family and helps them understand the psychological implications of testing
  • Arranges various prenatal screening and diagnostic tests and liaises with various local and international laboratories to ensure smooth coordination of testing
  • Communicates with clinicians and other medical staff within and outside of the department and coordinates appropriate and timely patient care
  • Participates in research and educational events for clinicians, other members of staff as well as the general public
