Job description

We are partnering with an established international container shipping company that is expanding its operational leadership team in Singapore. The company is looking an experienced and forward-thinking General Manager/ Deputy GM, Marine Operations to lead the full spectrum of marine operations across its global container fleet. The ideal candidate would have at least 5 years of leadership experience within international liner companies and have solid expertise in container operations, stowage, bunker management, port/terminal coordination, and fleet performance.

Key Responsibilities
Marine & Fleet Operations Management
  • Lead the day-to-day marine operations of the container fleet, ensuring navigational safety, schedule reliability, and compliance with global standards.
  • Oversee voyage planning, weather routing, speed & fuel optimisation, and bunker consumption management (IMO 2020 / MARPOL compliance).
  • Direct and validate stowage planning to ensure optimal capacity utilisation, vessel stability, and safe cargo operations.
  • Manage global port & terminal coordination, berth planning, congestion issues, and operational bottlenecks.
  • Ensure accurate operational documentation and compliance with international regulations, PSC/ flag requirements, environmental rules, and SMS policies.
  • Oversee vessel audits, inspections, certifications, and support technical teams on drydocking, retrofits, and performance upgrades.
Performance, Cost & Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Develop and manage operational budgets including port charges, bunker consumption, and marine-related expenses.
  • Monitor operational KPIs such as vessel turnaround time, on-time performance, bunker efficiency, and cost metrics.
  • Collaborate closely with commercial, network planning, chartering, equipment and regional offices to ensure operations align with business strategy and trade requirements.
  • Lead communication between Singapore operations and China HQ to maintain strong alignment on priorities and execution.
Risk Management and Senior Stakeholder Engagement
  • Lead operational response during disruptions: severe weather, port shutdowns, labour issues, equipment failures, or voyage delays.
  • Develop and execute contingency plans for vessel rerouting, missed port calls, and cargo prioritisation.
  • Engage with port authorities, terminal operators, P&I clubs, class societies, and regulators to uphold strong operational relationships.
Key Requirements
  • Master Mariner/ Chief Officer background is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in marine operations, including at least 5 years in leadership within international liner companies.
  • Strong knowledge of container operations, stowage, stability & bunker management.
  • Mandarin-speaking to liaise effectively with Chinese senior leadership and vessel operations teams.
  • Willingness to travel based on operational needs.
